Chapter Fifteen The Hospital When in doubt hide it under a mat and hope the mice eat it. I walked into Rodger’s hospital room revved up on McDonald’s coffee and disillusioned by Shifty’s philosophy. The ward had been modernised, and all the walls had windows; from one room you could see into the corridor, and across to the other rooms opposite. You could see who was stumbling to the toilet, the nurses casually walking around looking more like cleaners than nurses, and doctors looking too young to be doctors and worryingly tired. This was my golden opportunity to prove him wrong, that splitting up was not such a great idea. Somehow, the idea of him in hospital as helpless as a beached whale made it seem possible. I heard music playing from the next ward, the start of Days of our Lives.
