As the days went by, I found myself trapped in a web of deceit and uncertainty. I couldn't shake off the feeling that Nelson was hiding something from me, but I was too afraid to confront him. I began to notice more signs that something was amiss. Nelson would receive mysterious phone calls, and he would leave the room to answer them. He would also disappear for hours at a time, without explanation.
Was Nelson cheating on me? Was he involved in something illegal? Or was he simply hiding a secret from his past?
Despite my doubts, I couldn't bring myself to confront Nelson. I was scared of losing him, and I didn't know if I was ready for the truth.
My heart was racing as I approached Nelson, my eyes fixed on his calm and collected face. I had been searching for answers for what felt like an eternity, and I couldn't take it anymore.
"Nelson, can we talk?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Nelson looked up from his book, a hint of curiosity in his eyes. "Of course, Sophia. What's on your mind?"
I took a deep breath, my hands trembling slightly. "Who is she?" I asked, my eyes locked on his.
Nelson's expression changed, a flicker of surprise followed by a hint of guilt. "Who are you talking about?" he asked, his voice cautious. My eyes narrowed. "Don't play dumb, Nelson. I know about the portrait, the hair, the note. I want to know who she is and what she means to you."
Nelson sighed, his shoulders sagging slightly. "Sophia, I..."
"Please, Nelson," I interrupted, my voice cracking. "Just tell me the truth. I deserve to know."
Nelson's eyes softened, and he reached out to take my hand. "Her name is Isabella," he said, his voice low and gentle. "She was someone I cared about deeply, a long time ago."
My heart skipped a beat. "What happened?" she asked, her voice barely audible.
Nelson's eyes dropped, his gaze fixed on the floor. "It's a long story, Sophia. But I promise you, she is no longer a part of my life. You are the one I care about now."
My eyes searched his face, looking for any sign of deception. But all she saw was sincerity and regret. I took a deep breath, my heart still racing. "Okay, Nelson. I trust you."
Nelson's eyes locked onto mine, his gaze intense. "Isabella was my fiancée," he revealed, his voice low and husky. "We were together for five years, and I thought she was the love of my life."
I felt a pang in my chest, my mind racing with questions. "What happened?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Nelson's face contorted in pain. "She passed away," he said, his voice cracking. "It was a car accident. She was driving home from work one day, and...and she didn't make it."
I gasped, my heart aching for him. "Oh, Nelson, I'm so sorry," I said, my eyes welling up with tears.
Nelson's eyes misted over, and he nodded, his throat working hard to swallow. "It was a tough time for me," he admitted. "I thought I'd never love again. But then I met you, Sophia, and...and everything changed."
My heart swelled with emotion, my eyes locked onto his. "I'm so sorry you had to go through that," I said, my voice filled with empathy.
"But I'm glad you found me."
Nelson's face softened, his eyes filling with warmth.
"Me too, Sophia," he said, his voice filled with emotion. "Me too."
My eyes searched Nelson's face, my heart raced with doubts. I wasn't sure I believed his story. It sounded too convenient, too rehearsed.
And why hadn't he mentioned this to me before? We had been together for months, and he had never once mentioned an ex-fiancée, let alone one who had passed away.
"Nelson, why didn't you tell me this before?" I asked, my voice laced with skepticism.
Nelson's eyes dropped, his gaze fixed on the floor. "I didn't want to burden you with my past," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
"I wanted to move on, to focus on our relationship."
"But don't you think this is something I should have known about? Something that affects our relationship?"
Nelson's face contorted in a mixture of pain and guilt.
"I know, Sophia. I was wrong to keep it from you. But please, you have to understand, it's still hard for me to talk about."
My heart was torn. Part of me wanted to believe Nelson, to trust that he was telling the truth. But another part of me was screaming to beware, to not get too caught up in his words.
"I need some time to process this," I said finally, her voice firm but gentle.
"I need some space."
Nelson's eyes filled with understanding, but also a hint of fear.
"Okay, Sophia. I understand. But please, don't push me away. I need you."
My mind kept racing with doubts and questions. I needed to know more, to verify Nelson's story. And there was only one person I could think of who might be able to help me Bella. I quickly grabbed her phone and dialled Bella's number, her fingers trembling with anticipation.
"Hey, Bella! I need your help with something," Sophia said, her voice low and urgent.
"What's going on?" Bella asked, her tone concerned.
I took a deep breath.
"It's about Nelson. He just told me this story about his ex-fiancée, Isabella, and how she passed away. But something doesn't feel right. I need you to dig up some information for me."
Bella's tone turned serious. "What do you want me to find out?"
“I want to know if Nelson's story checks out. If Isabella existed, and if she died in a car accident."
Bella's response was swift.
"I'm on it, Sophia. I'll get back to you as soon as I have something."
My heart was racing as I waited for Bella's call. I knew that my friend would get to the bottom of things, and I was both terrified and relieved at the thought of finally uncovering the truth.
I went back to Nelson to ask him if Bella knew about his story, my eyes locked onto Nelson's, her gaze piercing.
"Nelson, does Bella know about your story? About Isabella?"
Nelson's expression faltered, his eyes darting away.
"Uh, no, Sophia. I don't think so. I mean, I never told her about it."
“Are you sure? Because I just asked her to investigate, and I think she might already know something."
Nelson's face paled, his voice stuttering.
"I-I don't know what you're talking about, Sophia."
My heart raced faster, my mind racing with possibilities.
Was Nelson lying to me again? And does Bella actually know something?
Just then, Sophia's phone buzzed. It was Bella.
"Hey, Sophia! I found something," Bella said, her voice low and urgent.
"Meet me at the coffee shop in 10 minutes.
I'll fill you in."
My eyes never left Nelson's face. "I'll be there," i said, my voice firm.
