Chapter Eight On the other end of the open line, Hank heard rustling as Cruz set the phone down, then footsteps. He went to answer the door, Hank realized. Hank could hear Cruz and another man talking, but their distance from the phone was too great; he could not make out what was said. His heart raced as he heard multiple footsteps, somehow menacing, faint at first, then more loudly. Next came a muffled shout, followed by what sounded like a struggle of some sort. He overrode his natural instincts to call out to his friend, instead willing himself into silence as he strained to hear every scrap of background noise coming to him across the tiny speaker.
