It is unfathomable to imagine anyone being more excited than me to be in the departure lounge at Linz airport. Having survived by the skin of my teeth, my destination was not a one-way ticket to Sydney, instead it was to Siberia – well, to be honest, 10,000 kilometres west. Moscow was my next stop. Not a punishment for an i********: f**k-up, Moscow was a major combined event on the WTA and ATP Tours. I downloaded a Lonely Planet guide. With its colourful images of Red Square and a glorious, violent and passionate history to boot, the city was the inspiration for some of my favourite books, War and Peace and Anna Karenina. There is nothing like a good epic family drama or romance to keep you up all night – well, maybe something, but the books had far fewer repercus
