Episode 18: The Nightmare’s Bane
The night was darker than usual. And the shadow that passed over Gloomhaven still lingered, like an ominous presence watching from above.
Kai felt it in his bones.
"The Bloodline of Nightmares…" he whispered, repeating the words Kiera had spoken. "What does that mean?"
Nox floated ahead, sensing the shift in the air. "Whatever it is, it's not good. And with the Council involved... it's got to be something ancient. Something that even vampires like me don't mess with."
Lira, still on edge, growled low in her throat. "Then let's find out what it is and deal with it."
They made their way to The Shade's Cross, an eerie, forgotten alley in the heart of Gloomhaven known for its unspoken rules and its old, haunted buildings. Rumor had it that the Nightmare Court once used the alley as a meeting place—a court of the darkest creatures who bargained with horrors older than time itself.
As they approached the crumbling archway that marked the entrance, a cold wind seemed to whisper their names, but it wasn’t just the wind.
Kai felt the unmistakable presence of nightmares lurking behind the shadows, moving in a way that no living creature should.
"Welcome," came a voice from the darkness, deep and jagged, like broken glass. "I’ve been waiting."
Out of the shadows stepped a figure—a tall, cloaked individual whose features were obscured by the dark fabric that rippled like smoke. They raised their hood, revealing a face twisted in a mixture of serenity and malevolence.
"The Nightmare King," Kai muttered under his breath. This was a name spoken of in whispers, a figure said to rule over the realm of the darkest dreams. But this one was different. The aura around him felt as if it could crush your mind.
"Who are you?" Lira demanded, her claws still sharp. "And why are you here?"
The Nightmare King smiled, and it was a smile that felt wrong. "I am the keeper of the Nightmare's Bane. You seek it, don’t you, Kai Velden?"
Kai stood tall. "I don’t know what you're talking about."
The Nightmare King laughed. "You will soon. The Nightmare's Bane is the only thing powerful enough to destroy the pact the Council has made with the ancient ones—those that slumber beneath the earth."
Nox raised an eyebrow. "So, it's not a new perfume line?"
"No," the Nightmare King answered darkly. "It is a weapon forged in the darkest corners of the multiverse, a force that turns nightmares into reality—turns everyone's darkest fears into power."
Kai’s heart skipped a beat. "If that’s true, then the Council is playing with fire. They're using something they don't understand."
"Exactly," the Nightmare King agreed. "But you, Kai Velden, are the only one who can wield the Bane, for your nightmares are the key. The Mirrorborn are the only ones who can access the rifts between worlds and shatter what has been made."
"But I’ve never…" Kai’s voice faltered. "I’ve never felt anything like that before."
"You will," the Nightmare King whispered. "In your dreams, and in your waking hours. The Bane will find you."
Suddenly, the shadows around them began to move again, this time more intensely, like the very ground was alive. A horrific presence surged from the depths of the earth, spilling from the cracks in the alley.
It was a nightmare made flesh.
Kai’s heart pounded as the ground trembled. Out of the shadowy mass stepped an ancient, monstrous figure, its form shifting and changing, a thing that could not be described by mere words.
The Nightmare King raised his hand.
"Do not be afraid, Kai Velden. This is only a preview of the Bane’s power. A nightmare turned into a weapon of destruction."
The figure lunged.
Instinctively, Kai raised his hands and summoned his mirror-magic, deflecting the beast’s swipe. The force of the blow sent him crashing into a nearby wall, but he was unharmed.
"I didn’t come this far to be scared," he muttered, forcing himself to his feet.
Lira charged forward with a roar, her claws glowing as they slashed through the nightmare creature's ethereal form. Each strike sent sparks of dark energy flying. Nox followed with a stream of shadow-based magic, attempting to bind the creature, but it slipped through his hands like liquid darkness.
Kai focused, his mind racing. This was more than just a battle—it was a test. The Nightmare's Bane wasn’t just a weapon; it was a key to something much greater, something that could potentially rip apart everything they’d fought to protect.
But there was one thing they all knew—no matter the cost, the Council had to be stopped.
"Kai Velden, you must choose." The Nightmare King’s voice cut through the chaos. "The Bane lies in your grasp. But to wield it, you must confront the darkest part of yourself. The piece of you that still fears. Still doubts. Still hesitates."
Kai clenched his fists. “I won’t hesitate.”
The creature lunged again, but this time, Kai stepped forward, his mind focusing on the nightmare, the beast, and everything the Bane represented.
He opened himself to the nightmares—not just his own, but all of them. The fears, the memories of the past, the things he’d tried to bury. He faced them all at once.
With a flash of light, his magic surged, and the creature dissolved into mist, vanishing with a final scream.
The Nightmare King nodded, a slow, approving gesture. "You are ready. But remember, Kai Velden—this weapon is not a gift. It will demand more from you than you realize. And once it has tasted the fear of the world, it will be hungry."
As the nightmare’s presence faded, Kai turned to face the others. “We’ve got what we need. But this isn’t over.”
Nox exhaled. "You keep saying that, but it never feels like we’re any closer to actually finishing this."
Lira’s eyes burned with determination. "I don’t care. We’ll finish this. Together."
The Nightmare King's voice echoed behind them as they began to leave.
"Be careful, Mirrorborn. The Council is only the beginning of the nightmare."
