"What do you mean" Devon questioned but it was already late, Jack had retreated to the back of his mind and put up a block between them. "Stupid mutt! Can't even see the bigger picture; all he cares about is being with his fated mate"Devon murmured, standing up from the bed and heading to shower. After showering; he went down to the brightly lit dining hall where pack members had started making their way to have breakfast. He almost ran into Candice in the hall way but quickly hid and she also didn't even notice him, being lost in her own world of thoughts.

"Why am I hiding? he muttered, it's not like I can avoid her and the questions that was for sure to come from her; he continued making his way to the dining hall while thinking of an excuse to tell Candice about the guards that were stationed outside his room. As soon as he stepped into the hall, his eyes locked with Candices'; she threw him a puzzled look but he flashed her a reassuring smile while settling down to have breakfast as the omegas assigned to the kitchen started trooping out of the kitchen with trays of food. Everyone present began to dig in and soon after, most people were done and were heading out for their daily tasks. Devon was done with his and rushed off to the training room where warriors had began sparring themselves; his eyes scanned the room searching for Jamie( the beta's son and Candice's brother who also happened to be his best friend). His eyes landed on Jamie's back who was busy training with the punching bag in the corner of the room and walked up to him.

"Hey man" he said as they both shook hands; "mind being my sparring partner?". While sparring; they got talking and joking around when suddenly Jamie asked ' Is everything good between you and my sister? Devon stopped mid sit-up; 'Yes', he responded. "What did she tell you?, he asked. 'Nothing, just said you've been acting weird for some days now and she hasn't been able to get ahold of you, she also mentioned that you now have guards stationed outside your door; What's really going on man? You know you can always confide in me no matter what but Devon just shrugged and said he has just been really busy. They both rounded off their training and went about their day while Devon rushed back to his room to take a quick shower but was in for a big surprise; he had just shut the door to his room behind him when he came face to face with Candice who kept looking from him to the figure that was hooked to machines laying in his bed. "Who's that?" Candice asked and the blood immediately drained from Devon's face but the only thing he could mutter was ' how did you get in? And where are the guards?' But he was sure he had seen the guards just outside his door. "Who is that? She asked again, he finally released the breath he was holding and muttered 'my mate'; this statement seemed to make Candice lose her balance and stumble back a bit. Devon tried to reach out so she doesn't fall over but she recoiled at his touch causing him to frown a bit. You met your mate? 'Yes' he replied; and when were you going to tell me? 'Soon' he replied making her scoff; 'I'm serious, I didn't want you to find out this way, he responded but I'm going to reject her'. This statement seem to peak her interest as she lifted her eyes to meet his; ' you will?, 'yes' he replied. "But why? She asked; 'because we both promised to take each other as chosen mate and you are the only one I love and want'; this statement makes her smile a bit.

I haven't seen her before, Candice muttered; " yes, that's because she isn't from our pack; she's a rogue. A rogue! Candice exclaimed ; yes I'm just waiting for her to gain consciousness so I can reject her but please can you keep this discovery to yourself? She nodded and walked out of the room; the guards were surprised to see her come out, "how did you get in? They asked but she just ignored them and walked away. Once she was gone; Devon came out to scold them, calling them incompetent and sending them away from his door.

A few weeks later, after everything seemed to have died down a bit and everyone seemed to be preparing for their Alpha's birthday party; something unexpected happened; Audrey finally gained consciousness. Devon was the happiest when he found out she was awake; he had just come back from training when he saw her sitting up on the bed, awake. "Finally, I can reject her and get this over with but her sweet scent made him stop dead in his tracks; he just wanted to hold her and that's exactly what he did. 'Stupid mate bond' he murmured before settling down in bed with her and linking his dad and the doctor that she was finally awake. The doctor came immediately to check on her ; after so many probing with different objects, he finally ascertained that she was fine but needed to start some easy physical therapy to wear off the rest of the wolfsbane; he suggested she could take a walk around the pack house or garden to exercise a bit. The first day she finally came out of the room, everyone was surprised to see her and just kept on whispering behind her back, wondering who she actually was. During dinner when everyone was present in the pack house, the alpha introduced her as a new pack member instead of Devon's mate as he had requested but this made her feel uncomfortable because before she passed out that day in the dungeon and when she finally gained consciousness, Devon kept claiming she was his mate so it was only fair she was introduced as his mate; so why hadn't the alpha introduced her that way? She kept wondering. After dinner, she headed back to Devon's room to wait for him and as soon as he stepped into the room, she started bombarding him with questions. 'Can I atleast answer the question one at a time? 'Sorry' she muttered and began asking the questions again. "Am I really your mate" he frowned before answering ' can't you feel the mate bond? I can, she responded; then why didn't you introduce me as your mate to the pack house? He paused a bit before answering 'I'll introduce you soon' but she looked at him suspiciously causing him to throw her a reassuring smile. 'Let's go to bed' he said moving to join her on the bed and soon, they had drifted off to sleep .

Five months later, everyone was busy preparing for Prince Devon's mating ceremony to Candice but Audrey was the only one oblivious to what was happening; although she had noticed the decorations but when she asked about it, Devon had told her that it was a pack member that was preparing for his mating ceremony and she believed him; 'why wouldn't she believe him? They had gotten really close within this few months and he had even told her that he loved her'. The ceremony was to hold at night and all day, Devon stayed in bed but just one thought was in his head "This would be the last time he would hold his fated mate because by night time, he would mark Candice as his chosen mate". Jack, his wolf stirred in his mind and asked him "did you really have to deceive her till this time just for your greed? 'What do you mean? He asked. Jack replied 'you don't want to mate with her but you still refused to reject her all this months just so u can have a taste of the mate bond; now that you both have gotten really closer, you want to break her heart and embarrass her in front of everyone'. When Devon didn't respond anymore to him, he retreated to the back of his mind.

It was finally night time and the moon had started to rise; Devon had left the room claiming he wanted to go check out how the mating ceremony was coming along while Audrey lay in bed, trying to drift off to sleep but she was woken up by a terrifying nightmare she had; she couldn't sleep after that and decided to take a walk in the garden . Everyone had gathered on the field and the ceremony had started; Devon and Candice were at the alter and the alpha was carrying out the ceremony. 'Stretch out your palm' he said to the both of them and proceeded to slit their palm letting their blood flow into a bowl together; Candice winced in pain when she was cut but was super grateful for the extraordinary healing which really came in handy after her palm was cut. Afterwards, they were both asked by the alpha to drink from the bowl, which they did but Devon couldn't stop fidgeting; wondering if it was the right thing to do but had to make up his mind that this was for the best. The moon had finally risen fully and was casting a beautiful glow on everyone's faces; the alpha announced it was time for Devon to mark Candice as his chosen mate. Just as he was about to sink his canines into Candice's neck; Audrey wandered into the field, she was drawn there out of curiosity as she had never really witnessed a mating ceremony but the scene before her felt so surreal and suffocating. Her mate, the same person that had told her he loved her a couple of days back and had just left the bed they share together was about to mark the same person he said he had broken things off with. She couldn't believe what was happening before her eyes, she stood rooted in her spot, confused and disoriented; just then Devon locked eyes with her. His eyes grew wide seeing her there; she tried to read his emotions through his eyes and saw a hint of guilt and sadness but this was quickly replaced by mockery; a smirk formed on his lips as he quickly sunk his canines into Candice's neck. She was still staring at the both of them when suddenly she felt a sharp pain in her heart; clutching her chest, she fell to the ground; her legs unable to bear the pain and keep her steady. She could feel their bond breaking and this only made the pain excruciating; she was finally noticed by a pack member who had rushed to get her on her feet, thinking she had tripped but just before she could reach her; she passed out from the pain
