Chapter 3 — The CEO’s Verdict

1620 Words
Midnight drenched HALCYON’s war room in neon blue. Naomi sprawled across the glass table, stylus spinning between her fingers like a blade. Clause twenty-seven glowed: MUTUAL VETO—NO EXCEPTIONS. She muttered, “No kings in my kingdom.” HALCYON purred overhead. “Drafting duration: three hours, seventeen minutes.” Adrian leaned in the doorway, tie gone, sleeves rolled. “Most lawyers would be unconscious.” Naomi didn’t glance up. “Most lawyers aren’t coming for Solaris’ throat.” She flicked the stylus. Clause twenty-eight lit: TEN PERCENT PROFITS—WHISTLEBLOWER DEFENSE. The golden quote shimmered above her notes: Justice doesn’t wait for permission. Her wrist buzzed. Sasha’s text: Cassandra just emailed new NDAs. Emergency at 0800. Naomi grinned like a wolf. “Let her bring paper. I bring fire.” Adrian set a mug by her hand. “Drink.” She sniffed. “Rocket fuel?” “Imported.” She sipped, coughed, laughed. “I’m awake.” HALCYON chimed, “Reminder: hydration improves cognition.” Naomi rolled her eyes. “Victory improves everything.” She dragged clause thirty-one into place. Jalen’s name glowed in the margin. Her pulse sharpened. She whispered, “We don’t let them bury you twice.” Adrian’s gaze softened. “You promised a war.” Naomi’s smile flashed. “I promised a spectacle.” Her phone buzzed again. A gif from her mother: a cartoon tiger punching a banker. Naomi snorted. “Mom says break their teeth.” Adrian arched a brow. “Genetic, clearly.” Naomi typed the last clause. “Clause twenty-nine: emotional support protocols. Anyone weaponizing trauma gets blacklisted.” HALCYON hummed. “Recommend rest.” She waved it off. “Rest when Wolfe rots.” The doors slid open. Jin Park popped her head in, eyes wide. “Two subpoenas came. I rerouted them.” Naomi tossed her a cookie. “Gold star.” Jin grinned. “Get sleep.” “After the Bar grovels.” Naomi stretched, whispering to the empty room, “Stay with me, Jalen. I’ll finish what you started.” Sunrise slammed through HALCYON’s glass spine. Naomi stormed into the executive boardroom, charcoal suit edged in sapphire, contract glowing on her tablet. Adrian shadowed her flank, silent but lethal. The board sat rigid. Cassandra waited at the head, lips painted murder-red, thick packets stacked. “Sign the non-competes,” she drawled. “Liability ends today.” Naomi dropped her own contract on top. “Or we sign mine.” Cassandra scoffed. “You overestimate your reach.” Naomi flicked her golden quote across the holo-wall: Justice doesn’t wait for permission. The room hushed. “Welcome to our new charter,” Naomi declared. Holograms flared: mutual veto, profit share, trauma protocols, empathy engine safeguards. Director Patel sputtered. “Ten percent diverted? Investors will riot!” Naomi snapped, “Cheaper than indictments.” Ms. Alvarez jabbed at clause twenty. “Unrestricted empathy engine logs?” Naomi smiled cold. “Someone has to guard your tech from being weaponized.” Cassandra slammed the table. “This is a power grab.” Naomi leaned closer. “Correct. I’m grabbing power back from cowards.” Adrian slid her a tablet showing live staff comments—cheering emojis, fists, flames. Patel muttered, “You think we owe charity?” Naomi’s laugh cut him. “You owe justice.” Mr. Kline coughed. “PR can’t spin this.” “Spin?” Naomi sneered. “We monetize transparency.” She pointed at clause twenty-four. “Every settlement review streams to staff.” Gasps. Cassandra hissed. “You’ll leak trade secrets.” “Only if you keep dirty deals.” Naomi toggled the boardroom livestream. “Smile, Cassandra. Everyone’s watching.” Cassandra’s face went paper-white. “You wouldn’t.” “Already am.” Naomi stabbed clause twenty-three. “Whistleblowers get hazard pay.” Patel whispered, “You’re making enemies.” Naomi shot back, “I’m making headlines.” She turned toward the glass wall. Staff pressed close, phones up, eyes blazing. Naomi waved. “Clip this. Send it to every exec who said we’d fold.” Cassandra hissed, “You’ll regret this.” Naomi’s eyes burned. “Regret implies doubt. I have none.” Adrian cleared his throat. “Vote.” Hands rose. Majority. Naomi gathered the signed charter, lips curling. “Board charter ratified. Cassandra, hand over your drafts.” Cassandra shoved them across. Naomi tore the top page in half. The staff erupted in cheers. Cassandra’s whisper dripped venom. “You humiliate me, I expose you.” Naomi smirked. “I have better lighting.” HALCYON chimed: Naomi Chen statement trending number one. Naomi blew a kiss. “Tell the world.” An hour later, Cassandra dragged engineers into the Horizon suite, slamming packets. “Sign now.” Sasha clutched her laptop. “What is this?” Naomi strode in, heels like gunfire. “No one signs anything.” Cassandra snapped, “Security!” No one moved. Naomi grabbed a packet. Clause 4.2 barred staff from contacting her. Clause 5.1 fired anyone speaking to investigators. Naomi laughed. “Congratulations, Cassandra. You wrote a felony.” “Prove it,” Cassandra spat. Naomi lifted her phone. “Judge Ruiz? Emergency TRO.” Cassandra snarled, “You can’t—” The holo-wall flickered. Magistrate Judge Ruiz appeared, robes crisp. “Ms. Drake, your clauses violate federal law. Injunction granted. Enforce them and you face sanctions.” Cassandra’s jaw dropped. Naomi saluted. “Appreciate the speed.” Ruiz nodded. “File within four hours.” The holo vanished. Naomi turned to the engineers. “Sign my one-pager.” Hazard pay. Immunity. Weekly counseling. Sasha signed first. “Finally.” One by one, the team signed Naomi’s sheet, sliding Cassandra’s back untouched. A junior coder raised his badge. “If they fire us, can we crash in your war room?” Naomi winked. “Bring snacks.” Laughter rippled. Cassandra seethed. “This is a workplace, not a fan club.” Naomi fired back, “Then stop acting like a villain.” “You think this ends with a signature?” Naomi’s grin sliced. “It ends when your name trends under workplace abuse.” HALCYON chimed: Board message: emergency session. Naomi breezed back into the boardroom. Cassandra stalked behind. Naomi slapped the signed charter down. “Meeting reopened. Announcement time.” Adrian projected an infographic: the Jalen Li Fellowship. Gasps rippled. Naomi stepped center. “HALCYON funds law students defending whistleblowers. Applications open tonight.” Patel stammered, “You can’t gift money without a vote.” Naomi raised a brow. “Watch me.” Cassandra hissed, “You’re bleeding us.” Naomi hissed back, “You’re bleeding morale.” She turned to the glass wall camera. “Whistleblowers watching this—we back you.” The feed erupted with emojis. Cassandra grabbed her sleeve. “You think you’re untouchable.” Naomi shook her off. “You’re obsolete.” Adrian murmured, “Tribunal at 0900.” Naomi nodded. “Time to fight on another front.” Cassandra snapped, “The tribunal has fresh evidence.” Naomi’s smile was lethal. “So do I.” She strode for the door. Cassandra screamed after her, “If you walk out, I leak your past.” Naomi didn’t pause. “Leak it. I’ll livestream your future.” The State Bar tribunal chamber reeked of polished wood and war. Naomi set her tablet on the defense table. Adrian sat behind her, silent storm. Opposing counsel Meredith Sloan preened. “New evidence, Ms. Chen.” She waved a folder. “Wire transfer to a shell. You diverted whistleblower funds.” Naomi’s smile iced. “Exhibit Defense Four.” HALCYON projected a Marshals email authorizing the transfer. Judge Patel frowned. “Counsel Sloan?” Sloan stammered. Naomi called Julia Stroud to the stand. “Read this.” Julia balked. Naomi tapped the screen. The holo blazed Julia’s email ordering the transfer. Gasps erupted. Naomi hissed, “You lied.” Julia snapped, “You were reckless!” Naomi’s voice cut sharper. “I saved lives.” She turned to the bench. “Call Mei Li.” Jalen’s widow stepped forward. “Naomi told us to hide. We’re alive because she disobeyed.” Sloan objected. Judge Patel barked, “Overruled.” Naomi locked eyes with the panel. “Want more? HALCYON.” Encrypted chats filled the air—Julia with Wolfe’s aide, plotting Naomi’s fall. The gallery erupted. Naomi whispered, “You tried to bury me. I planted bombs.” The panel recessed. Adrian squeezed her shoulder. “This is it.” Naomi breathed, “Finish line.” Minutes later, Patel returned. “Charges dismissed. License reinstated.” Naomi’s knees trembled. She steadied herself, holding the letter. Outside, cameras roared. Supporters chanted her name. Cassandra lingered on the steps, fury twisting her features. Naomi raised the letter skyward. “To every whistleblower—your lawyer is licensed again.” The crowd exploded. Adrian leaned close. “Security is nervous.” Naomi smirked. “So let’s make them sweat.” Her phone buzzed. Unknown number: You won the battle. Lose the war. Naomi laughed into the cameras. “Keep watching.” She hit livestream. Comments erupted: QUEEN IS BACK. CASSANDRA MELTING. Naomi waved. “Screenshot this apology. Frame it.” Cassandra spun away, phone plastered to her ear. Mei Li climbed the steps, eyes wet. “You did it.” Naomi hugged her tight. “Now we protect the next Jalen.” Reporters shoved closer. Naomi teased, “Buy the next chapter.” Glass shattered above. A masked sniper stepped onto the roof, rifle aimed. The red dot blazed on Naomi’s chest. She lifted her chin. Smiled. “Take your shot.” The chapter cut to black.
