CHAPTER 20
He doesn’t know, I thought, as I ate a piece of cold toast and stared across the table at Burk, who was reading a book and drinking his tea. Or maybe he did know but was kind enough not to show it. Either way, if he wasn’t going to bring it up, I wasn’t either.
“What are we doing today?”
“Are you feeling better, child?” he asked, looking up from his book, his eyes warm and kind as always.
“Yes.” From his sigh, I could tell he knew as well as I did that I was not feeling any better, but that I couldn’t hide in my room forever. I couldn’t trust myself to fall asleep or let my guard down. The ring could call for my powers and I could end up in the king’s lap next time.
