CHAPTER TEN

1484 Words
ATHENA’s POV. I don’t know for how long I slept until I gently open my eyes and I turn around. Doctor Seth is seated on the sofa in the room, his attention on the magazine that he is reading but as soon as I turn around, his head raises to meet my gaze. “You are awake,” his deep husky voice says as he drops the magazine on the couch, “how do you feel now?” Empty is the word. My stomach is empty, my heart is empty and my mind is numb. I don’t know how to process this anymore, I don’t know how to heal from this. “I will be fine,” I manage to answer. “For the time being, you will be in the icu.” He says, standing up and walking towards me, “the procedure was a dangerous one so we have to monitor you for the coming days. Don’t worry, everything you need will be made available for you. We just need to make sure you are fine, your uterus and your womb are okay too.” I scoff. Does that even matter now? Everything I was working for, I had already lost. “Thank you.” I tell him and the room falls into silence for a moment. The only sign of life is the beeping of the monitor. A part of me wants to yank it and throw it to the floor but I remain still; almost unmoving. “If you need anything, you just let me know.” He says again but I don’t reply. I just want to keep sleeping again. Without another word, Seth turns around and makes his way out of the room but halts by the door, slowly tilting his head. “I will come to check on you later. The nurse will come to administer your medicine.” And like that, he disappears out of the room leaving me to my thoughts. The silence immediately becomes deafening and my mind immediately begins to conjure a lot of things—scenarios to keep me calm. I try to think about the happy times I had with Stefan but the more I try, the more the silence closes in on me. I finally give up and just lay there. I no longer have any energy inside of me to cry. What right do I even have to cry when I couldn’t even protect my own child. I close my eyes and clench my jaw tight. I am ready for anything that wants to happen right now. “Is this the end?” My wolf asks inside of me but I don’t reply. I do not even have an answer for her. I just want this pain to be over. My phone buzzes and I slowly pick it up from the table. An unfamiliar number flash across my screen and i genuinely click on the receive button. “Hello ma’am,” a man’s voice reach my ear, “I am Mr King and I am the legal representative of Mr Stefan hallow, your husband.” I don’t even think too much, i already know why he is calling. Stefan cannot wait to divorce me, he can not wait to bring his cheating mistress to the limelight. “I am calling in respect to the divorce proceedings. The papers are ready and your husband has signed. When will you be available to sign?” “And who told you I want to divorce my husband?” I ask calmly. “Ma’am?” “Listen and listen good, Mr kings. I am not going to be divorcing him so you go back and tell him that that will not be possible.” I don’t wait for him to say anything else, I immediately end the call and fling the phone across the room. I watch as it shatters to the ground. Six f*****g years and thid is how he repays me. After everything I have done for him, after putting my own life on hold and he— My jaw clenches tighter at the thought of that. I am not going to divorce him and I am not going to let the two of them have the happily ever after they think they want to build. **** The noise from the hallway make me open my eyes and In that moment, the door to the ICU opens up and Stefan steps in. He looks angry, even his suit looks disheveled. “How dare you, Athena.” He yells. “Sir,” one of the nurses try to hold him back but he is fast enough to shove her off as his focus remains on me. “Hoe dare you tell the lawyer that you won’t be divorcing me?” “Our child is dead.” I tell him hoping for any kind of reaction but his face remains expressionless. He clearly doesn’t care. In the past three months, I have been the only person happy about this pregnancy. “Sign the papers, Athena,” he warns again, “or you won’t like what’s coming for you.” “What will you do?” I ask, angrily pushing my body off the bed, not caring about the pain I am feeling in between my legs. That pain is little compared to what is in my heart at the moment. “How dare you ask me to divorce you, Stefan?” I yell. For the past six years, this is the first time I am raising my voice at him and even though it’s all shades of who I am not. “Six f*****g years, Stefan” I scream again, “and this is how you want to throw ir away? Six years of my life and this is what you want to do to me?” “What?” He laughs, nodding, “so this is the real you, slut.” He hisses, “you pretend to be meek and calm but you are this vicious. How dare you raise your voice at me, Athena?” “If you want me to divorce you then you have to give me the years I spent with you.” I say as a matter of fact. The only thing I’m doing at the moment is trying to juggle his memory, trying to make him remember us. The world knows I love him and I won’t be able to live without him. I am more than willing to let go of what he and Gemini had. We both lost a baby and we both have to be there for each other. “Look, Stefan.” I try to touch him but he shoves me off, his eyes bloodshot. “If you dare to touch me, you will not have your limbs by tomorrow. You have three days to sign the papers or you have me to contend with.” He turns and makes to leave but I halt him. My voice is calm and collected at this moment. “Stefan. I am your wife and we lost a baby. We should— “I never wanted you as my wife in the first place,” he yells, turning to me. I flinch for a moment. The hate I see in his eyes is unlike anything I have ever seen before. He hates me and he is not even trying to hide it. “I hated you from the beginning and I hate you even more now,” he grabs my shoulders angrily, “so if you have any bit of shame left. You will sign the papers and take the alimony I am offering you, Athena.” “If you want to walk out of this hospital alive, unhand the lady.” Seth’s angry voice comes through as he appears by the door, the nurse and security behind him. Stefan scoffs as his eyes dart across the two of us. “And who are you?” He asks. “Your doom if you do not take your sorry ass out of this place this minute.” “Grandpa is trying to fight for his daughter?” He mocks and despite the tension in the air, I can’t help but compare the two of them. Compared to Seth, Stefan looks like he snuck his way into earth. “Who do you think you are to speak to me in that manner?” Stefan blurts out, his eyes darkening the more. Seth looks at me and his forehead curls. I don’t say anything, I turn and walk back to the bed. “Get this piece of s**t out of here.” He orders and the security men immediately get to work while he makes his way towards me. “Mrs Athena.” He begins, “starting now, we are going to be laying some ground rules.”
