SETH’s POV.
I decide to take the food to her myself but when I reach her door and I see her step mother there, my whole demeanor changes.
A few minutes ago, the information I asked for was sent to me. Her mother died when she was still young and her father remarried. Her step mother hated her and it was an open secret. She got married to Stefan six years ago and it wasn't the most juicy of marriages.
Seeing the woman now, anger wells up inside of me and I am not sure why.
“I believe you are the doctor that called us.”She says, her voice devoid of any kind of emotion.
“Yes, I did”
“We were at a function.” She replies, “Do not call us next time for such flimsy stuff. Athena is old enough to take care of herself.
“By marrying your own daughter to her husband?” I ask back, “it’s giving desperation at its peak, lady”
“How dare you—
I don’t bother to wait, I walk past her and make my way into the room. At that moment I see Athena lunge at her father with her phone and I immediately throw myself in the middle. She is shaking in my arms but I don’t move, I only hold onto her.
The two of us remain in that position until I hear the door behind me close and this is when she looks up at me, her eyes misty and full of tears.
“I think I lost the baby this time around.” She manages to say.
“You didn't"
“I am bleeding.” She whispers and this is when I look down to the pool of blood in between her legs
“s**t!!” I immediately pull her into my warm and rush out of the room.
“Emergency!” I yell and everyone begins to rush towards the theatre, nurses are already on standby.
I lay Athena on the operating table and we immediately set to work. I can see the fear in her eyes but her body looks tired.
“I no longer want the baby.” She mumbles, her hand slowly holding onto mine.
“Be calm,” one of the nurses tells her.
“She is losing a lot of blood, doctor.” Another yells; “she is going into hypovolemic shock.”
“Administer some anesthesia,” I tell the nurse and return my attention to the woman on the table, “I will do everything to make sure you and your baby are fine so you better don’t give up on me, Athena”
“Seth—my name dies on her lips as her eyes close.
“Let’s do an ultrasound.” I yell out an order. She is a beta wolf and that means her body can hold it for a while. I am looking to stable her before her body loses it. I am going to make sure I sniff every single atom of life from that bastard she calls a husband.
One of the nurses quickly starts the ultrasound but as my eyes rest on the monitor, a knowing dawns on me.
“There is no movement from the fetus, doctor”
My heart skips. The theatre suddenly becomes cold as my eyes drift off to the unconscious woman. She has spent months protecting this baby and now—
“We should prepare for emergency evacuation before it gets worse,” Doctor Scott, who is beside me, announces and they all get to work.
“I will conduct the process,” he tells me and I nod. I won’t be able to conduct it anyways.
Without another word, I turn around and make my way out of the room while pulling out the stress ball in my pants pocket.
With each press, my anger intensifies. The nerves of all of them put her through this kind of trauma.
I walk into my office and Zeke bows to me. He is my beta and my right hand man.
“Alpha,” he calls out.
“Why are you here, Zeke?” I ask him, “aren’t you supposed to be at the pack house?” I slump on my revolving chair and let out a sigh. My lab coat is still on my body, her blood still on it. The more I see the blood, the more mine boils.
“This is to keep our family afloat,” her father’s words ring in my head again.
“Damian. How is he?”
“He is not awake yet,” he replies, “but the pack healer says he is showing progress.”
“Good. Keep an eye on him.”
Damian is my junior brother. He took a hit for me three years ago in the pack war and since then he has been in a coma.
“And Alpha.” He continues, “the other packs want to know if the annual pack meeting will hold.”
“No,” I immediately respond, “they should each report to their alphas and I should get the report through the mail. For the crescent blood pack, do not give them any information.”
His forehead curls into a slight frown.
“Why alpha.”
Thinking about the fact that Stefan is the aloha of that pack is already infuriating enough.
“Just do as I have said.”
“Yes, alpha”
“You may leave”
As soon as he turns to leave, my phone buzzes and my assistant’s name pops up.
“Hello sir” her voice filters through.
“Cancel all my meetings for the next three days,” I tell her, “and handle everything in the company until I return to work. I am a bit busy
“Yes sir.”
“Tell me. Why did you call?”
“I was calling in respect to the board meeting but I will handle that.”
“I will see you when I get back to work.”
After ending the call, I close my eyes and let out another sigh as the image of Athena lying on that table becomes fresh in my heart again
The fact that I feel a connection to her is overwhelming and seeing her in that kind of pain makes me want to make me put my claws into all of them.
“You haven’t reacted to a woman like this in eight years,” my wolf says, “is this a welcome development for the both of us? Do you think she is our mate”
I don’t reply to him, I only shut his voice out of my head. This is not the time to talk about mates. I know that’s not possible. The moon goddess is not that generous to give me another mate after I murdered the one I had.
The knock on my door pulls me out of my train of thought and I open my eyes while nurse Mira steps in.
“She is awake, Doctor Seth” she tells me and my heart skips a beat but I remain seated there, my eyes on her.
“How long has it been?”
“Two hours, sir.”
I have been seated here for two hours with only the thought of a certain someone in my head—f**k!
“She has also been transferred to the ICU, doctor” She adds.
“I will change my clothes and come to see her”
“Okay sir”
After she steps out, I pull my body off the chore and slowly remove my lab coat, dumping it into the trash can that’s near my glass table. The white shirt I am wearing is also stained so I make my way into the inbuilt condo.
I quickly change into another pair of shirts before leaving my office.
With each step I take to the ICU, something envelops me, something feral and almost animalistic. It’s like I have seen something I want but it’s not mine and it’s annoying the hell out of me.
When I finally walk into the ICU, her head slowly turns towards me. Her lips are patched and her eyes are dried—she doesn’t know yet.
“You are awake.” I say as I halt in front of her bed, “how do you feel?”
“Empty.” She answers calmly, “is my baby okay?”
I swallow hard as I look away.
“I lost it. Didn’t I?”
“We had to perform an emergency evacuation,” I tell her, “we had to keep you safe”
“Hmmm” I watch her swallow hard too and the feeling in my chest intensifies. I have not felt like this in a long time and I don't even know how to contain myself right now.
“Isn’t that good news?” She whispers, biting back a tear, “at least—
“Shhhh,” I press my index finger on her lips, “don’t say anything. You need rest.”
She smiles wearily and doesn't say anything but her gaze remains on me. I can see the pain in her eyes and how I want to take them away.
“You have beautiful eyes,” she says calmly again, scoffing lightly, “you don’t look real.”
“I am real, Athena” my voice is much deeper than I intend, I swallow again.
“I am sleepy.”
“I will be here when you wake up.”
Like that’s the assurance she needs, she turns to the other side but not before a tear slips out of her eyes.
“Handsome men always end up ruining me.” I hear her whisper but I don’t reply, I only keep looking at her—the image of my ex wife in my head.
