CHAPTER EIGHT; The name she cannot say

705 Words
The Calipps mansion had always been beautiful. But lately... Luna had begun to notice how quiet it was. Not peaceful. Quiet. There was a difference. The halls were always polished. The gardens were always perfect. The servants moved with careful precision. Everything was exactly where it belonged. Yet somehow, the mansion always felt as though it was waiting for something. Or someone. Luna stood in front of the bookshelf in the old family library, running her fingers along the spines of forgotten books. She wasn't searching for anything particular. She just needed somewhere that didn't feel like a cage. A small wooden box caught her attention. It sat tucked behind several old novels, covered in dust. Luna froze. She knew that box. Slowly, she pulled it out. For a moment, she simply stared at it. Then she opened it. Inside was a collection of small things that meant nothing to anyone else. A dried flower. A few old notes. A small wooden carving of a moon. Her fingers gently touched the carving. A soft smile appeared on her face. "You always said I looked too serious." Her voice was barely a whisper. The memory came easily. A boy running through the garden with a book under his arm. A boy who would sit beside her when everyone else was too busy. A boy who never cared that she looked different. "You're too quiet, Luna." She could almost hear him saying it. "You think too much." She smiled sadly. "And you talked too much." For a moment, the library didn't feel so empty. Then the feeling disappeared. Because memories were all she had. Luna closed the box carefully. She hated that she couldn't hear his voice anymore. Couldn't ask him what he thought about the family. Couldn't ask him what he would have done if he were still here. Sometimes she wondered... Would things have been different? Would Father still be the same? Would she still feel so alone? A knock interrupted her thoughts. She quickly placed the box back. "Come in." The door opened. Nathan stood there. "I hope I'm not interrupting." Luna shook her head. "No." He smiled slightly. "I was looking for you." "Why?" "Because everyone else in this house seems to know exactly where they're supposed to be." He glanced around the library. "And you look like someone trying to disappear." Luna raised an eyebrow. "Is that what I look like?" "Sometimes." She almost laughed. "You're very honest." "I've been told it's a problem." For some reason, Luna found that comforting. Nathan wasn't trying too hard. He wasn't pretending to know her. He was simply trying. And she appreciated that. Later that afternoon, Alexander found Luna in the garden. "My Little Moon." She turned. Her father stood near the rose bushes, watching her carefully. "You've been distracted." "I'm fine." He gave her the same look he had given her since she was a child. The look that told her he knew when she was lying. "Are you unhappy?" The question surprised her. Luna looked away. "No." Alexander was quiet. Then he gently touched one of the flowers. "When your brother was here..." He stopped. Just for a second. But Luna noticed. "When he was here, you were different." Her chest tightened. She hadn't expected him to mention him. "He made you laugh more." A small smile appeared on Alexander's face. "He was always finding ways to get you into trouble." Luna looked down. "He understood me." The words came out before she could stop them. Silence followed. Alexander looked at her. And for the briefest moment... He looked less like the powerful man everyone feared. He looked like a father missing something too. "I know." His voice was quiet. Then, as quickly as it appeared, the emotion disappeared. "You should prepare for tonight's meeting." Luna nodded. The moment was gone. That evening, Luna found herself thinking about two people. One she had lost. And one she barely knew. The boy who once made her feel understood. And the stranger who didn't even know her name. She didn't understand why both felt impossible to forget. But maybe... That was the most dangerous thing about secrets. Sometimes, they began long before you discovered them.
