Something about seeing all those people at the party made me uncomfortable. Seeing old colleagues and some employees congratulate me for something that I did not even know about, shook me. I could not help but think about how many of those people actually cared about me. As my wife wheeled me towards the party, I could see it all. Fake people everywhere, their laughter that once I hated I did not feel that hate anymore. The fact that they were walking ad I was stuck to a wheelchair did not hurt me anymore. I sat the table with a few diplomats that I knew and used to hang out with them. The conversation felt bland and boring.
