The Face Behind the Shadows

1140 Words
Dawn had not yet arrived over Arkenfall, but inside the palace the night refused to end. Prince Kael Armand stood in the strategy chamber, the map of the city spread before him once again. Red markers now dotted several locations across the capital. Western Market. South Bridge. Carriage District. Water Supply Gate. And now… The palace itself. Each marker represented a bomb. Each bomb carried a timer. And those timers were steadily counting down. Less than twenty-four hours remained. The engineers were already working carefully to disarm the explosive found beneath the palace, but their progress was painfully slow. One wrong movement could trigger the device instantly. Kael knew he could not rely only on disarming the bombs. They needed to stop the person who had planned all of this. Because somewhere in the city, the mastermind behind the shadow faction was waiting. Waiting for Arkenfall to burn. Kael had barely spoken for the past hour. Instead, he walked slowly around the strategy chamber, thinking. Rolen watched him carefully. “You’re trying to see the entire plan,” he said quietly. Kael nodded. “Yes.” Elira’s voice came through the communication device again. “The attacks, the infiltrations, the bombs… it all fits together too perfectly.” Kael stopped walking. “That’s because this plan wasn’t made in a few weeks.” He turned back toward the map. “It was prepared for years.” Rolen frowned. “You think someone has been planning this since before the reforms?” Kael looked up slowly. “Yes.” Someone who understood the city. Someone who knew the palace. Someone who had watched the rise of Arkenfall closely. And someone who hated what the kingdom had become. Just then, a palace guard entered the chamber carrying a small wooden box. “My prince… we found something in the tunnel chamber.” Kael stepped closer. “What is it?” The guard opened the box carefully. Inside was a folded piece of parchment sealed with dark wax. Rolen leaned forward. “A message?” Kael broke the seal slowly. Inside was a single line written in bold ink. When the city falls, the throne will finally return to its rightful hands. The room grew silent. Rolen looked confused. “Rightful hands?” Kael’s expression changed slightly. Because that phrase meant something. Something old. Something political. Elira spoke again through the communicator. “That sounds like a claim to power.” Kael nodded slowly. “Yes.” He had heard those words before. Long ago. During stories told by his father. Stories about rival families who once fought for control of Arkenfall generations earlier. Families who believed the throne had been stolen from them. Families who disappeared after losing the struggle. Or so everyone believed. Kael suddenly turned toward Rolen. “Bring me the royal archives.” Within minutes, several old historical records were placed on the strategy table. Kael flipped through the pages quickly. Dynasty records. Council disputes. Political conflicts from decades earlier. And then he found it. A name. He read it quietly. “House Virell.” Rolen frowned. “That family vanished almost forty years ago.” Kael nodded. “They didn’t vanish.” He tapped the parchment message again. “They waited.” Elira spoke slowly. “The message said the throne will return to its rightful hands.” Kael looked at the family records. “And House Virell believed the throne belonged to them.” As Kael studied the documents further, another detail emerged. One surviving heir. A young child who disappeared when the family lost power. A boy who would now be a grown man. Kael’s voice became quiet. “If that child survived…” Rolen finished the thought. “He could be leading the shadow faction.” Kael nodded. “And planning to destroy Arkenfall so he can rebuild it under his own rule.” It was a terrifying strategy. Destroy the current government. Let the city collapse. Then appear as the “savior” who restores order. Elira spoke carefully. “Do we know his name?” Kael scanned the page again. Then he said it. “Darian Virell.” The name hung in the air like a storm cloud. Across the city of Arkenfall, in a quiet stone building overlooking the northern district, a man stood beside a window watching the sleeping streets. His expression was calm. Almost peaceful. A servant entered the room quietly. “The palace attack failed.” The man nodded slightly. “I expected that.” “And the soldiers were captured.” Still no reaction. “That also was expected.” The servant looked uneasy. “Then… the bombs?” The man finally turned. His eyes were cold and calculating. “The bombs will succeed.” The servant hesitated. “What if they find them?” The man smiled faintly. “They won’t find them all.” He walked toward the window again. “And even if they do…” He paused. “The final device cannot be stopped.” Back at the palace, Kael was still studying the map. Something still bothered him. The bombs formed a ring around the palace. Except… One area was missing. Kael’s eyes narrowed. “Rolen.” “Yes?” “There should be another bomb.” Rolen looked at the map. “Where?” Kael pointed to the northern district. “The city council building.” Rolen’s eyes widened. “That’s where the governing assembly meets.” Kael nodded. “If the palace and council are destroyed at the same time…” The kingdom would lose its entire leadership. Chaos would be inevitable. Elira’s voice came through urgently. “Kael, that must be where the final device is hidden.” Kael grabbed his cloak immediately. “Then we’re going there now.” Within minutes, Kael and a group of guards rode through the dark streets of Arkenfall toward the council district. The city remained mostly quiet, unaware of the disaster approaching. But Kael could feel the clock ticking. Every second mattered. Because somewhere in the council building… The final explosive device might already be waiting. And if it detonated… The heart of Arkenfall would be destroyed. Prince Kael Armand discovers the identity of the mastermind behind the shadow faction. The conspiracy appears to be led by Darian Virell, the surviving heir of a powerful rival family that once claimed the throne of Arkenfall. Darian’s plan is devastating: Destroy the palace and city leadership with coordinated explosions, then seize control of the kingdom afterward. As Kael studies the bomb pattern across the city, he realizes one final explosive may be hidden in the city council building. Now Kael is racing through the night to stop it. But unknown to him… The mastermind believes the final device cannot be stopped. And the countdown continues.
