The shadow was coming towards me, and I let out a soft sigh when I spotted Mason.
“Clara,” he whispered, as though his words were being swallowed up by the cave. “I searched for you everywhere. You vanished during training and—” He trailed off in mid-sentence, his eyes widening as he looked around. “What is this place?”
“I'm not entirely sure,” I said, watching him warily. “I was tracking a particular smell which seemed… important.”
Mason moved slowly, almost in reverence, to the painting wall. He held out his hand, fingers inches above the ancient markings, before he touched them with such delicacy it pained my heart.
