My bedroom was in the princess' apartment, which was a section of the palace's second floor that was designated to the princess or any other daughters that the king and queen would have had. In the apartment, there were many bedrooms, three of which were occupied by I, Maribel and Iris. The queen did not occupy the head couple's apartment since the king died so she moved into the princess' apartment into her own room. I was yet to be queen so I couldn't move into the head couple's apartment with Ven just yet.
It was already nighttime and the banquet was still taking place in the dining hall. Ven had not yet made his appearance there because he had to take bring the family doctor to his room to tend to her broken ankle, have her moved to her own room which she would be occupying in the meantime, and then search for me with the help of Ira and a few of the other servants. He would not head to the banquet just yet because he wanted to take me back to my room.
He still believed that I was sick and being out in the cold in the middle of the night would only worsen my health. He made mention of that when he lifted me up in his arms so that I wouldn't have to walk through the snow. At first, I was confused as to what he was talking about but I soon realized that it was a lie that Iris came up with as an excuse for my absence the time when I was supposed to be welcoming the guests with Ven. Of course, so as to not cause any trouble, I went along with Iris' lie and had Ven carry me back to the palace.
"You were with Ira before I arrived, weren't you?" Ven asked as he looked ahead. We were walking through the snow and I looked up at him, trying to figure out how he could have found out. I looked down at my body, specifically at the scarf I was wearing around my neck. It was the one that Ira gave me and Ven had seen him wearing it earlier.
I was mistaken by believing that Ven was angry about me seeing Ira a few minutes ago. He was actually relieved because he couldn't come to find me until after he had taken care of Fleur. He saw Ira as a friend and he was my friend as well. He was grateful that there was someone who could comfort me when I was upset and he couldn't be there for me.
"He found me first and I was with him for a while," I said, avoiding to make mention of what exactly happened when we were together, especially the kiss Ira gave me. Ven would have been infuriated if he ever found out that Ira was still pursuing me even though I was to be married to him. Both men had their own fiancée and it was time that their love rivalry came to a stop. It would ruin their friendship otherwise.
"I'm sorry I couldn't come to you first," he said, "... Fleur's ankle is broken and it wouldn't have happened if I didn't forcefully push her away. I caused her injury so I had to make sure she was taken care of."
I understood his words but that didn't change the fact that I was sad over them. He had to prioritize Fleur and her injury because a broken bone was no joke. I sprained my elbow and the pain I felt was so great that I had to hold in my screams. For a werewolf to break a bone, as they were considerably stronger than humans and their bodies could withstand certain injuries, it was a serious matter. Ven must have used a significant amount of strength on her. Of course, he was responsible for her injury.
If he were to ignore her, that would ruin his image as the king in future. No one wanted to be under the rule of a king who couldn't take responsibility for his own actions. I understood all of that but after what I witnessed, I preferred that he kept his distance from Fleur. We reached the palace and he took me inside to experience the warmth that it provided. I was glad to be back inside again but the palace still didn't feel like home to me. Not with Iris and Mari waiting to make my day worse than it already was.
Luckily for me, both of them were attending the banquet so I wouldn't have to see them until the next day. I wanted nothing but to get into bed and go to sleep. My thoughts would definitely keep me awake for a while but as long as I was in the comfort of a bed and with Ven by my side, I would be very happy.
When we finally arrived to my bedroom in the princess' apartment, Ven entered the room and walked straight to the bed where he laid me down to sit on it with the gentleness that one would have towards a child. Once his hands were free, he rested them on the sides of my neck and leaned in to kiss my forehead. It was warm due to the amount of time I spent out in the cold. I wasn't sick before but if I didn't get any rest, Iris' lies might end up becoming the truth.
"Rest for tonight. I'll ask someone to bring you some medicine to take. I'll come to see you in the morning," he said when he moved away. I smiled and gave him a peck on the lips before he could move out of reach. He caught by surprise but not in a bad sense. With that, he walked out of the room and closed the door, but not before giving me one final look and flashing a smile at me.
He had left so I sighed heavily and rested my head on the pillow. I wanted to change into more comfortable sleepwear but I didn't have the energy to stand up. My thoughts and emotions had tormented me so much that I had a headache. I couldn't wait for the servant that was asked to bring me the medicine and fell asleep within minutes after I placed my head on the pillow.
