Chapter Six ~ The Unthinkable

588 Words
The morning air felt heavier than usual as Lyn walked into the cold, glass-walled lawyers office. She had dressed neatly, trying to maintain some semblance of composure, but inside, she felt hollow, trembling. It hadn’t even been a full week since Ethan had left, and it all felt too rushed. The conference room smelled faintly of leather and coffee. Ethan sat on one side of the long table, precise, distant, while beside him sat a smug Vivian, the woman whose presence had shattered her life. Her expensive blazer hugged her frame perfectly, hair pinned back just so, green eyes gleaming with triumph. Next to her, a stern-looking attorney shuffled papers, glancing at Lyn with what felt like barely concealed judgment. “You understand why we’re here,” the attorney began, voice calm, almost clinical. “This is about the baby. It’s in the best interest of the child to remain with its father and a woman capable of providing proper care.” Lyn’s throat went dry. “I… I don’t understand. I’m . . . capable. I-l-” Vivian’s lips curled into a smirk as she leaned forward, brushing a hand lightly over Ethan’s arm in a deliberate, showy gesture. The message was clear: I have your husband. He’s mine. You… are nothing. “You see,” Ethan said, his voice cold and measured, “Vivian and I agree. This . . . arrangement is best for everyone. Especially the baby.” Lyn’s stomach tightened. The words hung in the air like a weight, pressing down on her chest. The baby. Her unborn baby. She could barely breathe. The meeting ended quickly, leaving Lyn alone with the echo of her own disbelief. She had nothing. No home, no access to money, no husband, and now, according to the legal system, not even the right to protect the baby she carried in her womb. Driving home, her hands gripped the steering wheel until her knuckles were white. She had to tell the girls. She couldn’t shield them forever, and she couldn’t let them sense how fragile her control was. She sat them down at the kitchen table. Emma, six, and Juni, four, watched her with wide eyes, sensing the tension. “I need to tell you both something,” Lyn began, voice tight but steady. “Daddy . . . he’s going to live somewhere else from now on. We’re going to be moving too. And… there’s a chance your new baby brother might . . . might not be able to stay with us at first.” The words barely left her lips when Emma stood, small fists on the table, voice trembling with fierce anger. “No! That is my baby brother! No one but us can have him!” Juni stood up on her chair, eyes shining. “Yeah! We are all still together no matter what, right, Mama?” Lyn’s chest ached, but in that instant, something shifted. Their love, their trust, their belief in her was undeniable, and for the first time in hours, maybe days, she allowed herself a glimmer of hope. She straightened, pressing a hand over her stomach, feeling the baby move in response to her heartbeat. Their small faces looked to her, expectant, trusting. She would not let them down. No matter how impossible the road ahead seemed. She swallowed hard, letting the fear settle into something sharper: resolve. The baby, the girls, her life - she would fight for them all, and she would find a way to win.
