Lara found the cream-colored envelope on her desk at work. No return address, just her name in flowing gold script. Inside was an invitation to Mia’s engagement party — black-tie, at one of the city’s most exclusive hotels.
For a long moment, she stared at it. The old Lara would have felt a rush of excitement, already planning hair appointments and jewelry. But now, she felt… uncertain.
That night, she mentioned it to Sienna while they cleaned up brushes at the warehouse.
“Are you going?” Sienna asked, rinsing a streak of cobalt blue from her hands.
“I don’t know. It feels like stepping back into a world I’ve been walking away from.”
“Maybe it’s not about the world,” Sienna said gently. “Maybe it’s about the person.”
Lara thought of Mia — the friend who’d once stayed up with her until sunrise after a bad breakup, who’d laughed until she cried at their shared inside jokes. Beneath all the glitter, there had been something real.
When Lara got home, she laid the invitation on her dresser. Her reflection in the mirror caught her eye — no makeup, hair loose, paint on her forearm. The idea of showing up as herself, without the old performance, both scared and intrigued her.
She picked up her phone and typed: I’ll be there.
