BLOOD FOR A KINGDOM

Elara followed Kade down the dark halls. The new mate bond was a brand on her ribs. Gold and silver and fire. Every step he took, she felt it.

The healers’ wing was silent. Too silent.

Lyra lay on the stone table. Grey had reached her eyes. Her chest barely moved. Frost coated her lips.

The head healer was on her knees. “Alpha... she’s fading. The binding is eating her from the inside.”

Kade didn’t answer. He walked to Lyra’s side and sliced his palm with his claws. Blood poured out. Black and thick.

“How many drops?” Elara asked. Her voice was steady. The bond wouldn’t let her break.

“Not drops,” Kade said. He pressed his bleeding hand to Lyra’s mouth. “All of it. Until the curse breaks.”

The blood hit Lyra’s lips and hissed. Steam rose. The black veins recoiled, screaming. Lyra arched off the table and gasped.

“More,” Kade growled. He cut deeper.

Elara grabbed his wrist. “You’ll kill yourself.”

“Then I die,” he said simply. Silver eyes on Lyra. “But she lives.”

The bond flared. Elara felt his pain like it was hers. Felt his determination. Felt the king inside him that would burn the whole world to save one child.

“No,” Elara said. “There’s another way.”

She grabbed a dagger from the healer’s tray and sliced her own palm. The bond pulsed and Kade turned to her, furious.

“What are you doing?”

“You said mates share blood,” Elara said. She pressed her bleeding hand to Lyra’s chest, right over the glowing silver symbol. “So let’s share it.”

The moment their blood touched the curse, the room exploded with light.

Silver. Gold. Black.

The symbol on Lyra’s ribs flared so bright Elara had to close her eyes. The symbol on her own shoulder burned in answer. The bond between her and Kade turned into a bridge.

His royal blood. Her witch blood. Pouring into Lyra together.

Elara screamed. Kade roared. The wolf made of smoke and bone tore out of both of them and stood over Lyra’s body, teeth bared at the curse.

The binding fought back. Black veins shot up Lyra’s neck toward her face. But the combined blood was stronger.

Crack.

The silver symbol shattered.

Lyra sucked in a breath. A real one. Her eyes opened. Blue. Clear. Human.

“I’m... cold,” she whispered.

Elara collapsed. Kade caught her before she hit the floor. He was shaking. Pale. But alive.

“It’s done,” the healer whispered. “The curse is broken.”

Silence.

Then Kade looked down at Elara in his arms. At her bleeding hand in his. At the new mark on her shoulder, now glowing faintly.

He leaned down. His forehead touched hers.

“You stupid, brave witch,” he murmured. “You could’ve died.”

“So could you,” Elara whispered back.

The bond between them settled. Quiet. Whole.

Kade stood, carrying her like she weighed nothing. Lyra was already sitting up, drinking water, color returning to her face.

“Take her to my chambers,” Kade ordered the healers. “Both of them. Guard them with your lives.”

As they walked out, the pack was waiting in the hall. Sixty wolves. They dropped to their knees as one when they saw Elara in Kade’s arms. Saw the glowing mate mark. Saw Lyra walking behind them, alive.

Kade stopped. Held Elara tighter.

“This is Luna Elara Nightshade,” he said. His voice rolled down the hall. “My mate. My wife. My kingdom. Anyone who calls her witch-licker again answers to me. Understood?”

“Yes, Alpha,” sixty voices answered.

In their room, Kade set Elara on the bed. Gently. Like she might break.

He crouched in front of her. Took her bleeding hand in his.

“The contract is over,” he said quietly. “You saved her. You’re free to go.”

Elara looked at him. At the blood on his shirt. At the exhaustion in his silver eyes. At the bond, golden and warm between them.

“Where would I go?” she asked.

Kade’s jaw tightened. “I don’t know.”

Elara reached up. Touched his face. “Then I’m not going anywhere.”

Kade closed his eyes. Like the words hurt and healed him at the same time.

“Mate,” he said.

“Mate,” Elara answered.

Outside, the red moon was gone. Dawn was breaking. Grey and gold over the Blackwood palace.

And for the first time in ten years, the Alpha King wasn’t alone.
