MIDNIGHT MARK

1106 Words
Midnight came like a blade. Elara counted her breaths. In. Out. In. Out. The bond around her ribs pulsed with each one, echoing Kade’s heartbeat through the stone door. He was on the other side. Waiting. “Strip, Luna. I need to mark you.” His voice didn’t rise. Didn’t ask. It rolled through the bond and made her bones vibrate. Elara’s fingers trembled at the hem of her dress. The fabric was already torn from kneeling in frost. Selling herself had been easy. This felt worse. She thought of Lyra. Grey skin. Black veins. Frost for breath. Three drops wouldn’t save her. Hessa said one drop breaks a curse, but Lyra needed rivers. Kade had oceans of power and he was giving her a cup. Elara let the dress fall. It pooled at her feet like shed skin. Cold air hit her bare back. She hated that her hands shook. Hated that he’d hear it. Hated that the bond would tell him she was afraid. The lock clicked. The door opened. Kade didn’t come in at first. He stood in the doorway, filling it. Tall. Broad shoulders blocking torchlight. He wore black, like always. The only color was his eyes. Silver. Sharp. Watching. He stepped inside and shut the door. The sound was soft. Final. “You’re shaking,” he said. It wasn’t a question. “Wouldn’t you?” Elara wrapped her arms around herself. Too late. She’d already shown him weakness. Kade moved closer. His boots made no sound on the stone. Predator’s walk. “Turn around.” Elara obeyed. She couldn’t look at him. If she did, she’d see those silver eyes deciding what she was worth. Instead she stared at the tapestry across the room. Past Luna queens with silver eyes and dead smiles. All of them claimed. All of them trapped. She felt his heat before she felt his hands. Kade’s palm came down on her shoulder. Warm. Too warm. It burned through the cold like he was fire and she was snow. The moment he touched her, the bond flared. Not pain. Pressure. Like his hand was on the iron collar around her ribs and he was testing the metal. Seeing if it would hold. Kade’s other hand came up. Fingers traced the nape of her neck. Bare skin. No collar. No mark. Not yet. “Witches don’t bear marks,” he murmured. His breath was at her ear. “But you’re not a witch, are you? Just a desperate girl who bled on my contract.” Elara bit her tongue. Don’t flinch. Don’t lie. Don’t give him anything. His thumb pressed harder. She felt it then. The edge of his claws. Just the tips. Not enough to break skin. Enough to remind her what he was. Alpha. Monster. King. “The mark binds you to me,” Kade said. “My wolves will smell it on you. My enemies will see it. For one year, you wear my claim.” His claws sank in. Pain exploded across her shoulder. Hot and bright and wrong. Elara gasped. Her knees buckled but Kade’s arm caught her waist, holding her up. He wouldn’t let her fall. Not yet. The bond twisted. Tightened. It was like someone had taken the iron collar around her ribs and hammered it with a blacksmith’s fist. Once. Twice. Three times. Blood welled under his claws. Elara tasted copper in her mouth. She didn’t cry out. She wouldn’t give him that. “Look at me,” Kade ordered. She couldn’t. If she did, she’d see silver eyes and remember he was the man who vowed to kill every witch. Including her. Kade’s grip on her waist tightened. He forced her chin up with two fingers. Rough. Commanding. “Look at me, Luna.” Elara met his eyes. Silver. Endless. Like moonlight on a frozen lake. Beautiful. Deadly. They flared as his blood touched the wound on her shoulder. And that’s when the monster woke up. Fire raced through her veins again, but this wasn’t the bond’s fire. This was hers. Deep. Old. Hidden. The magic she’d buried since her mother died hissed awake at the scent of Alpha blood. Elara felt it coil in her chest. Teeth. Claws. Hunger. The monster inside her that she’d never named. It recognized his power. It wanted it. Her vision blurred. For one second she saw it. Not the room. Not Kade. A wolf made of smoke and bone, huge, with silver eyes like his. It lunged at her, teeth bared, and she felt its breath on her throat. Then it was gone. Elara stumbled forward. Kade caught her before she hit the floor. His arm was iron around her ribs, right over the bond. “What was that?” he demanded. His voice had dropped to a growl. He felt it too. Through the bond. The flare of magic she couldn’t hide. “Nothing,” Elara lied. Her voice shook. “Pain. That’s all.” Kade’s silver eyes narrowed. He stared at her mouth, at her throat, at the mark bleeding on her shoulder. It wasn’t a normal mark. It pulsed. Black and red, shaped like a wolf’s fang. But under it, faint as a shadow, something else was forming. A symbol. Old magic. The kind her mother warned her never to use. The kind that could wake monsters. Kade felt it too. His thumb brushed the mark. The bond snapped tighter, and Elara felt him inside her head for one heartbeat. Cold. Calculating. Angry. Then he let go. He stepped back. The loss of his heat made her shiver. Kade turned to the door, shoulders stiff. “The mark is done,” he said without looking at her. “For one year, you bear it. You bear my name. You do as I say.” Elara sank to her knees. The dress was on the floor. She dragged it up, covered herself, but the mark burned through the fabric like it was nothing. When she looked up, Kade was gone. The door was closed. Locked again. But the bond wasn’t quiet anymore. It thrummed. Alive. And somewhere deep in her chest, the monster inside her licked its teeth and settled down to wait. She pressed a hand to her shoulder. The mark was still bleeding. Still hot. Still claiming her. Down in the healers’ wing, Lyra’s breath fogged in the cold air. Three drops. That’s all she had. Elara closed her eyes. The wolf made of smoke and bone stared back at her from the dark behind her eyelids. The year had just begun, and the monster was already awake.
