Aurora's POV
You—"
Smith didn't let her finish. He launched himself at her and the force of his body sent both of them crashing into the limestone wall.
Victoria screamed as Smith pinned her there, his hand wrapped around her throat.
"You touched her." His voice was terrifyingly calm.
Rio rushed toward me instead. He crouched beside me, his hands hovering over my body as his eyes moved over every cut and bruise.
"Aurora." He called.
"I'm fine."
He stared at me. "You look like you fought an entire pack with your face."
I gave him a weak glare. "Nice to see you too."
His lips twitched for half a second before his expression became serious again. "Can you stand?"
"I think so." I pushed my palms against the ground. The moment I tried to rise, my knees buckled and he caught me around the waist.
"Apparently not." He looked at my trembling legs. "Your body is ending it for you."
I rolled my eyes but before I could answer, another growl echoed through the ravine. I looked over to find Smith. He had Victoria pinned against the limestone wall, his eyes glowing with murderous fury.
"You tried to kill my mate."
Victoria struggled against his grip. "You think killing me will change anything?"
Smith's fingers tightened. "No." His voice dropped dangerously. "But it will make me feel better."
"Smith!" I shouted.
His head turned and our eyes met.
I shook my head. "Don't kill her."
His jaw clenched. "She almost killed you."
"I know." I looked at Victoria. "And I want her alive."
Victoria's expression changed. She knew exactly what I meant. She had answers and I intended to get them.
Smith slowly released her and she stumbled forward, coughing as she rubbed her throat.
For one brief moment, I thought we'd won, then she smiled and a sharp whistle pierced the ravine.
My blood ran cold and in that moment, I noticed something moving above us then another and another.
Rio's face hardened. "We have company."
I looked up to find dark figures appeared along the ridge, their silhouettes barely visible through the smoke and dust.
Victoria stepped backward with a smile curling up her lips."You really thought I came here alone?"
My heart dropped. Smith moved in front of me. Rio drew both blades and I forced myself upright despite the pain ripping through my body.
There were too many of them and suddenly, I understood why she'd come here.
Victoria had never come here just to kill me. She had come here to start a war.
The moment Victoria finished speaking, a howl ripped through the ravine then five more answered from different directions.
My stomach dropped when my eyes swept round the ravine to find them everywhere. We were boxed in.
"f**k," Rio breathed.
A wolf came flying off the ridge.
"Move!" Smith's shout barely left his mouth before the creature slammed into him. They hit the ground hard enough to send stones rolling down the slope, and Smith's body disappeared beneath the wolf's massive frame.
"Smith!" I started toward him, but another wolf charged straight at me. I ducked and Its claws scraped across the top of my head, taking a handful of hair with them, and I stumbled forward as it spun around for another attack.
I grabbed the dagger at my waist as the wolf lunged and drove the blade upward.
It sank into its chest, warm blood splattered across my hand.
The wolf collapsed at my feet and I barely had time to breathe before something crashed into my back.
I screamed.
My face slammed against the jagged limestone, pain exploding across my cheek as claws dug into my shoulder. I twisted violently and elbowed the wolf in the ribs.
It snarled in my ear as I reached backward, grabbed its fur and threw my weight sideways. We rolled down the slope together, my back scrapping against the stone while the wolf snapped at my throat.
I jammed my forearm beneath its jaw when its teeth closed inches from my face.
"Get off me!"bI scrambled up and slammed my knee into its face. It fell and another wolf immediately took its place.
"Are you f*****g kidding me?" I barely got my arm up before claws ripped across my forearm. I gritted my teeth and punched it so hard my knuckles cracked.
The wolf stumbled then something hit it from the side. It was Rio. He slammed his blade into its neck and kicked the body away.
"You're welcome." I stared at the blood running down my arm.
"You could've gotten here sooner."
"I was busy!" A wolf leaped between us and Rio shoved me backward. Its claws sliced across his chest.
"Rio!"
He grabbed the wolf by the throat before it could strike again and drove it into the ground.
I watched him shift and a massive wolf replaced the man standing before me.
He lunged, his jaws clamped around the attacking wolf's neck.
The scream that followed made my stomach twist then another wolf tackled Rio from behind, crashing him into the dirt.
"Rio!"
Two more wolves rushed us. I backed away.
"There are too many!"
Smith appeared beside me in his wolf form, blood dripping from his muzzle. He slammed into one attacker so hard they both rolled across the ground.
The air smelled of iron and dirt, and the screams of fighting wolves echoed against the limestone walls until I couldn't tell where one battle ended and another began.
Then I saw her Victoria running toward the opposite end of the ravine.
My blood boiled. "Victoria!" I took off after her.
"Aurora, no!" Smith's voice followed me but I ignored him.
My legs were already shaking, but I pushed harder. Victoria glanced over her shoulder and she ran faster.
I chased her up the rocky slope, grabbing branches to pull myself higher whenever my feet slipped. My lungs burned, my vision blurred but I kept going. She couldn't escape, not after trying to kill me.
I reached the top of the ridge just as she disappeared between the trees. "Victoria!"
I stumbled forward and my wolf suddenly whimpered inside me. The venom. I'd forgotten how badly it was spreading.
The world spun. "Not now." My wolf whimpered again as I pushed away from the tree.
Victoria looked back. She saw me struggling and that cruel smile returned.
"The venom is winning, Aurora."
"f**k you." I took another step but my leg gave out and I crashed onto the forest floor. My vision darkened at the edges and the last thing I heard was footsteps pounding toward me.
"Aurora!"
