Aurora's POV
"Where's my daughter?" My voice came out hoarse, but the panic behind it made Smith, who had been sitting in the chair beside the bed, immediately straighten.
"She's safe." He assured me but that was not enough.
"Where?"
He stood quickly. "Aurora, she's—"
"Where is she?" I pushed myself upright so fast that the room spun. Pain stabbed through my head and Smith reached for me.
"Slow down."
"Don't tell me to slow down."
I shoved his hand away, my heart pounding so hard it hurt. "Where is she?"
Smith exchanged a look with Rio and that was enough to send shivers down my spine. Many many thoughts went through my head.
"What happened?" I demanded.
"Nothing happened," Rio said quickly. "She's perfectly fine."
"Then bring her to me."
Marcus, who had been standing near the window, nodded toward the door. "She's already on her way."
I froze.
"You brought her here?"
"Of course."
The door opened before I could say anything else and a woman stepped inside carrying my daughter. The moment I saw her, every bit of pain in my body disappeared beneath a wave of relief so overwhelming that my eyes immediately filled with tears.
"Baby." I said, my eyes welling up with tears as Maya stretched her little arms toward me. I reached for her and she was placed carefully into my arms, and I pulled her against my chest so tightly that she squeaked in protest.
I didn't care. I buried my face in her hair and breathed her in and she smelled like home.
"Oh, my baby," I whispered, my voice breaking. Her little fingers curled around the fabric of my shirt.
I closed my eyes and for a moment, I wasn't in the penthouse. I wasn't surrounded by people who wanted me dead or hunted, I was her mother and she was alive.
That was enough.
"I thought I lost you." She obviously didn't understand the words, but she rested her head against my chest anyway.
A tear slipped down my cheek and I wiped it quickly. I didn't want them to see me cry.
Unfortunately, when I looked up, all three of my mates were watching me.
Smith's expression was painfully soft, Rio looked away, giving me the privacy I hadn't asked for and Marcus stood completely still, but there was something in his eyes that told me he understood exactly what this moment meant.
I looked down at my daughter again. "I promise you," I whispered, pressing my lips against her forehead, "I'm never letting anyone take you from me."
My arms tightened around her. "Nobody not even Victoria is going to take you away from me. And if she dares it, I'm going to kill her."
And that was a promise I was willing to keep.
Smith cleared his throat. "You don't have to make promises like that."
I looked at him. "Yes, I do."
"Aurora—"
"I failed to protect myself."
My voice shook. "But I won't fail her."
"You didn't fail anyone," Rio said quietly and I looked at him. "You weren't supposed to be fighting an army alone."
"I shouldn't have chased Victoria."
"No," Marcus said.
I frowned and he walked closer. "You shouldn't have."
I glared at him. "Thank you for the
support."
"I'm not criticizing you." He tried to explain but I cut him off because I didn't have the strength to go back and forth with him.
"It sounds like you are."
"I am telling you the truth." His voice remained calm, which somehow irritated me more. "You were poisoned. You could barely stand yet you chased a woman who had just tried to kill you."
"I almost caught her." I retorted.
"And almost died."
The room went quiet and I looked away because he was right and I hated that.
Smith moved closer. "From now on, you're staying here."
My head snapped toward him. "Excuse me?"
"Until we know exactly how many people are after you."
"No."
"Aurora." He called. “This is the only place where you're going to be safe.”
"I said no."
Smith's jaw tightened. "You nearly died."
"And I'm alive so I don't need a babysitter." I patted Maya tightly when she began to move like she wanted to cry.
Rio snorted and Smith turned toward him.
"What?"
"I didn't say anything." He shrugged.
"You laughed."
"Because you sounded like her father."
Smith's expression darkened. "I am trying to keep her alive."
"And I'm saying locking her inside this penthouse isn't keeping her safe." Rio replied.
Smith took a step toward him. "Do you have a better idea?"
"Yes."
"Then say it."
Rio folded his arms. "Train her."
I blinked and Smith stared at him. "You want her fighting again?"
"I want her to be capable of defending herself."
"She's already capable." Smith replied. “She's more than capable of protecting Maya.”
"Then why was she poisoned and nearly killed?"
Smith went silent and I looked between them.
"Are you two seriously arguing about me while I'm sitting here?" Neither answered and I rolled my eyes. "Unbelievable."
Marcus finally spoke. "Both of you are missing the point." They turned toward him and his expression was unreadable. "The attack wasn't random."
I stiffened. "What do you mean?"
He looked at me. "Victoria knew where we were."
My stomach dropped. "How?"
"We're still trying to figure that out."
"Still?"
Marcus nodded. "There are people investigating."
I narrowed my eyes. "People?"
"Yes." And when I asked who these people were, he didn't answer immediately. That hesitation didn't escape me.
"What aren't you telling me?"
"Nothing."
I scoffed. "You're a terrible liar."
Rio looked at Marcus. "I told you she'd notice."
Marcus ignored him and I looked down at my daughter, who was now playing with
the collar of my shirt.
My heart softened again. Whatever they were hiding, I would find out but for now, I had her and I wasn't letting anyone take her from me.
Not Victoria or the wolves or the council who wanted her.
I kissed her forehead again then I noticed something. Marcus's phone vibrated. He glanced at the screen and his expression changed.
He stepped toward the window before answering. "Yes?"
I couldn't hear the voice on the other end but I could hear Marcus's response.
"No." A pause. "She can't know yet."
My brows pulled together. Marcus lowered his voice. "What?"
I watched him carefully.
"Her daughter was never supposed to be involved."
My entire body went still and he ended the call. Slowly, he turned around and our eyes met.
"What did you just say?"
