Chapter11

Aurora's POV I stared at the man standing across the room, my mind struggling to place his face beneath the dim light of the penthouse. There was something familiar about him and it was not his clothes or the way he stood, but his face and those eyes. I had seen them before. A little closer look at the picture and my breath caught when I recognized him. “I know you.” The words slipped out before I could stop them. Marcus, who had been standing near the window, immediately turned toward me. Rio's teasing expression disappeared, while Smith straightened from where he had been leaning against the wall. “You know him?” Marcus asked. I nodded slowly, still staring at the man. “He used to work at the old training grounds.” Rio frowned. “You're sure?” “Yes.” I nodded, certain that I was not mistaking him for someone else. I rubbed my temple, trying to pull the memory together. It had been years ago, before everything in my life had become complicated, before I had three men hovering around me like I might break if they looked away for too long. “He wasn't one of the trainers. He helped with the younger wolves. I remember seeing him around all the time.” Marcus's jaw tightened. “And you never thought to mention him?” I turned my head toward him. “Was I supposed to give you a list of every person I've ever met?” His expression darkened. “I'd prefer knowing.” “Of course you would.” I rolled my eyes and folded my arms, ignoring the ache that immediately pulled through my ribs. Smith noticed and he asked me to sit but I told him I was fine. “You don't look fine because you're holding your sides.” I glanced down. I was in pain but that didn't mean I was going to admit he was right. “I can still stand.” Marcus stepped forward. “And you can still make your injuries worse.” “Oh, wonderful. Here we go again.” I turned away from him, but a small sound from the bedroom stopped me. The healer had returned Maya and she was in her room now. Everything else disappeared from my mind. I hurried toward the room or at least I tried to hurry. Three sets of footsteps followed behind me. “I'm going to start charging you people rent if you keep following me everywhere,” I muttered. Rio chuckled. “You'd have to catch us first.” I ignored him. My daughter was awake in her crib, rubbing her tiny fists against her eyes while making those soft, unhappy noises babies made when they had just woken up and didn't understand why nobody had immediately appeared. My heart melted. “Oh, sweetheart.” I carefully lifted her into my arms. She immediately curled against my chest, her little fingers grabbing a fistful of my shirt as she made a sleepy sound. I kissed the top of her head. “Did you miss Mommy?” She answered with a string of incomprehensible babbles. Rio leaned over my shoulder. “I think that was a yes.” I smiled despite myself. “She probably has more sense than you.” He placed a hand over his chest. “That hurt.” Smith laughed quietly, even Marcus's expression softened as he watched us. For a moment, everything felt strangely normal. There was no enemies or question, just my daughter in my arms and three men standing around us. Maybe this penthouse could actually become a place where I could breathe. At least until Marcus opened his mouth. “You need to rest.” I slowly looked at him. “I just woke up.” “And you were already walking around.” “I walked ten steps.” “Too many.” I stared at him. “Are you serious?” “Completely.” Rio snorted. “Congratulations, Aurora. You've been adopted by a very controlling Alpha.” Marcus shot him a glare. “I am trying to keep her alive.” “And she's trying to live.” Smith's voice was calm, but the words made Marcus turn toward him. “She should be allowed to make her own decisions.” Marcus folded his arms. “She nearly collapsed yesterday.” “And she is standing today.” I looked between them. “Are you two seriously arguing about me while I'm standing right here?” Neither answered and I sighed. “Unbelievable.” My daughter suddenly grabbed my hair. “Ow.” I gently freed her tiny fingers. “See? Even she agrees with me.” Rio laughed. “She definitely gets that attitude from you.” I gave him a look. “Keep talking and I'll show you a lot more that you don't know.” I suddenly felt self-conscious. “What?” “Nothing,” Smith said. Rio smiled and marcus simply looked away which made me narrowed my eyes because something told me this was going to become a problem. --- The next morning, I woke up starving. My daughter had already been fed and was sitting in her little playpen in the living room, happily chewing on a soft toy while making random noises that sounded suspiciously like she was holding an important meeting with herself. I smiled when I saw her then I smelled food and my stomach growled. Finally. I walked into the kitchen and stopped dead. There were three plates sitting on the counter. I looked at them then at the three men in aprons then back at the food. “What is this?” Rio pointed toward one plate. “Breakfast.” “I can see that.” Marcus cleared his throat. “It's what you need.” I picked up the plate. There were eggs, vegetables, and something that looked suspiciously healthy. I looked at him. “You made this?” “Yes.” I slowly placed it back down. “Why does this look like punishment?” Rio burst out laughing, smith covered his mouth, marcus didn't look amused. “You need proper nutrition.” “I need food and this doesn't look like food at all.” I turned the plate. “It looks like a cry for help.” Rio nearly choked and I looked at the second plate. It had pancakes, fruit and something that actually looked edible. I immediately reached for it and Marcus caught my wrist. “Not that.” I looked at his hand around my wrist, then slowly raised my eyes to his face. “Excuse me?” “It has too much sugar and too much sugar is not good for your health.” “It's pancakes, Marcus.” I said. “Calm down.” “You're recovering.” “So?” “So you need to eat properly.” I pulled my hand away. “I am eight months away from having a baby, not eight months old.” Rio burst out laughing so loudly that my daughter startled in her playpen and started babbling angrily. “See what you did?” I pointed at him. He immediately went to her. “Sorry, little one.” and she grabbed his finger. “She forgives me.” “She has terrible judgment.” Marcus sighed then he pushed another plate toward me. “I made something else.” I looked at it. It was toast, fruit, tea and something else. “You made three breakfasts?” “Yes.” “Why?” His eyes moved briefly toward Rio. “Because apparently everyone has an opinion.” Rio leaned against the counter with a smug grin. “I made the pancakes because she deserves something good.” Smith folded his arms. “And I made the fruit and oatmeal because she should choose what she wants.” I looked from one man to another then at the ridiculous collection of food covering the kitchen counter. “Are you three fighting over breakfast?”
