Chapter 2

Freya "How are we even going to explain it to her?" Dad asked. "Look, Xavier, we don't have much time. She could shift possibly in a couple of weeks or maybe months. There is no way we can exactly tell when she might shift, " The male voice replied. "How is she even going to handle this enormous amount of power?" Mom asked worriedly. "I will help her train, " the male replied. Who were they talking about? And what was this enormous power they were speaking of? Were they possibly speaking about me? I waited outside the office holding my breath and trying to find out more about this mysterious she, they all were talking about. What if they were talking about me? But how could that be possible? Why was I supposed to shift now all of a sudden when I hadn't shifted in the last two years. "I think there is someone eavesdropping on our conversation, " the unknown male voice echoed. My legs froze on the spot, I couldn't even move. I stood there anxious as a pair of quick footsteps echoed inside the room and the door was opened suddenly. "Uh- Dad, " I stammered. "Freya, what the hell are you doing here?" Dad asked alarmed. "I was just checking up on you guys. I am hungry and wanted to know when we could have dinner, " I made a petty excuse. From the expressions on Dad's face, it was clear that he had not bought my excuse. It won't be a surprise, my Dad was the smartest person I had ever known. "Who is it, Xavier?" Mom asked from inside. Dad moved aside from the doorway so that Mom and the unfamiliar male could have a look at who he was talking to. "Ohh, Freya. It's an honor to meet you, " the male said in a delighted tone. I couldn't understand why he looked so delighted to meet me. Most of the time people avoided me like I was some plague, that they might contract if they come near to me. I hated such kinds of people, mostly they were the children of Alphas of the different packs. Those kids thought they were higher than me just because they had got their wolf once they had turned eighteen. "Freya, meet Michael. He is an old acquaintance, " Dad introduced me to the man. Dad had not mentioned his last name. He had only introduced him to me on a first-name basis. I was wondering who this man could be and why had he suddenly came along? "Hello, Michael, " I greeted. "Hello, Princess, " he replied. I was a little taken by the man calling me Princess. He should be someone Dad must have been closed to. Only my Dad called me Princess. "Dad, are the rumors true about my birthday celebration?" I asked Dad. "Of course, they are true Freya. I want to have a big celebration for my only daughter's twentieth birthday, " Dad replied delightedly. "But Dad, I don't want any celebration, " I replied in a sharp voice. "Freya, " Mom's voice held a warning tone. I looked at her sheepishly. Mom had always been strict with me. She was not like Dad who used to spoil me rotten with his love. "Mom, I don't want any celebration, " I pouted. Mom gave me a stern look and spoke, " The invitations have already been sent. There is no chance we can cancel it now." I just groaned in annoyance. My parents never let go of any chance to make my life miserable. Why couldn't they understand such a simple thing that I didn't like spending time with people? Especially Mom always used to drag me along with her to the tour of the pack. She made sure I was there when she went door to door and discussed the problems of the pack members and the possible solutions for them. There was no use of waiting here and arguing with them when they had already sent the invitations. I left Dad's office stomping my feet on the dark wood floor. The two weeks until my birthday flew by like minutes. I had been busy with my annual exams at college. I had taken pre-med at the college. I always had wanted to be a doctor and save people's lives. Dora had been driving me crazy the last two weeks discussing the dress she was going to wear. She had bought it from a mall in the nearby city. Our pack was an hour's drive from the city. The werewolves preferred to stay away from the bustling of the cities. We resided in areas mostly closer to the forest so we could hunt easily. Our pack territory was one of the largest in America. Mom had bought a black evening dress for me. It was backless and accentuated my curves. She was worried if I might bump into my mate on the night of the party. I think the reason for Dad inviting the packs from our neighboring territories was because I might end up finding a mate. Though the chance looked really slim to me of finding a mate, I couldn't help but go along with their plans. I had my last exam on the morning of my birthday. I showered and got dressed and came to college driving my Audi. Dad had gifted me this car on my last birthday. The only problem I had was my bodyguards. Dad had only increased there number when I was not able to shift. I was his only daughter and an easy target for his enemies. Many attempts had been made on my life in the past. My parents didn't want to risk my safety. Hence they ensured I was guarded all the times when I was not on the pack territory. I was shutting my locker door when I sensed that chilling sensation once again. It was like someone was watching me. I looked around I was the only one present in the hallway. My guards were not allowed to step inside the college building. The hairs on my neck rose yet again. I was certain that someone was watching me. I shut my locker and turned calling, " Who is there?" I didn't receive any reply, I could sense someone's presence around but I was not able to see them. It could have been my imagination, but this was happening a lot of times and I don't think that it's just my mind playing tricks on me. I walked towards the exit of the building, holding my backpack in my hand. I wanted to get out of this place as fast as I possibly could. If it was some wolf from enemy packs or some rogue, I would be dead meat before my guards could rescue me. I cursed my wolf again for not reaching out to me and staying hidden somewhere inside me. I took a turn in the hallway which led to the exit and started walking in quick steps. I heard a pair of footsteps behind me. I was so terrified that I didn't even want to turn and look at the person who was following me. I was sure if I stayed here alone for a few more minutes, my birthday was going to be converted into my death day. "Where were all the students?" Everyone must have left early because it was the last day of college. I had been sitting in the exam hall after the teacher had collected the answer sheets, wondering how I was going to go through with the celebration tonight. I had been so caught in my misery that I had no sense of time at all. By the time I realized I was the only person left in the college. I looked at the main door desperately, it still was so far from me. What if the person caught me before I reached the door? Should I run and reach for the door or should I maintain my pace? I was desperately thinking about how I was going to save my life from the monster following me. The footsteps were getting closer and closer and I was terrified that they could catch up on me. I tried walking faster making sure not to let the person sense that I knew they were following me. The door might have been a few feet away when my foot slipped on my front from some water lying on the floor. My backpack flew and fell a couple of feet away from me. I cursed myself and tried to get up, but I slipped again. I didn't even have the courage to look around and see the face of my stalker. I knew that whoever it was, they were here to kill me and they won't stop until they complete their task. I tried again in desperation to get up from the floor, but my limbs betrayed me. I stayed splayed on the floor waiting for my approaching death.
