The Man in the Shadow

855 Words
The music in the club grew louder, almost as if the night itself had a pulse. Anna tried to focus on Mitchelle who was already dancing like she owned the place, but her mind kept drifting back to the man in the VIP section. His eyes. The way they held her. Like he already knew her. Like he had questions she wasn’t ready to answer. Mitchelle shouted over the music, “Anna, loosen up! You’re stiff like Jollof rice wey stay for fridge.” Anna laughed despite herself. “I’m trying.” She moved a little, swaying with the beat. Not dancing exactly, just letting the music pull her in small motions. But every time she turned, her eyes somehow found their way back to that corner in the club. And he was still there. Romano. Watching her with an unreadable expression. Just then, Mitchelle nudged her. “Come, let’s go say hi to Jay. He’s here too.” They made their way through the crowd toward the bar. Jay was leaning against the counter, wearing a shiny jacket that looked like it was made for the spotlight. He screamed when he saw them. “Annnaaaa! Girl, you didn’t tell me you’re coming out tonight!” Jay almost hugged the life out of her. “It was spontaneous,” Anna said, smiling shyly. Jay stepped back and looked at her outfit. “Okay, who styled you? Mitchelle, you did this? You’re a queen.” Mitchelle flipped her hair dramatically. “I try.” They all laughed and talked for a while. Jay told a wild story about almost tripping onstage while hosting a small show last week. Mitchelle made jokes. Anna slowly relaxed, sipping her drink and letting the energy of her friends warm her. But then the air changed. A sudden hush moved through a part of the club. A subtle shift. Not everyone noticed, but Anna felt it in her bones. Jay noticed first. “Oh. He’s standing up.” Anna turned slightly. Romano had risen from his seat. His guards stayed behind, but his presence alone was enough to create space around him. People moved out of his way without being told. His steps were slow, steady, controlled. And he was coming toward her side of the club. Anna’s breath hitched. Don’t look. Don’t look. Don’t look… She looked. His eyes locked with hers again, and her heart stuttered like it didn’t know how to beat anymore. Jay followed her gaze and gasped. “Wait. Is that… Romano?” Mitchelle’s smile faded. “You know him?” Jay whispered, “Everybody knows him. He’s dangerous, babe. Very dangerous.” Anna felt the words but didn’t fully understand them. Dangerous? He didn’t look dangerous. He looked… intense. Sure. Intimidating. Definitely. But not reckless. Not chaotic. More like someone in complete control of himself. Then he stopped. Not too close. Not too far. Just enough for Anna to feel the weight of his presence. He didn’t speak at first. He just watched her. Studied her. Like she was a puzzle he wanted to solve. Finally, his voice came. Deep. Calm. Smooth with a cold edge. “You don’t belong here.” Anna blinked. She didn’t know if he was warning her or observing her. Before she could answer, Mitchelle stepped in. “Excuse me? And you are?” Romano didn’t even look at her. His eyes stayed on Anna. Unmoving. Unblinking. “You’re new to places like this,” he said quietly, but the quietness was stronger than shouting. Anna swallowed. “Yes. First time.” Romano nodded once, slowly, like that answered something in his mind. Jay tugged Mitchelle’s sleeve. “That’s Romano Adrik. Mafia king. Crime boss. Very very very powerful. Please don’t provoke him.” Mitchelle froze instantly. Romano’s gaze softened by a tiny fraction as he studied Anna’s expression again. “What’s your name?” he asked. Anna hesitated. Her voice almost got lost in her throat. “Ana… Anna.” “Anna.” He repeated it like he was testing the taste of it. Then something unexpected happened. He smiled. Not a friendly smile. Not a sweet smile. A small, rare, dangerous one. Like he hadn’t smiled in years but she gave him a reason to try. He leaned slightly closer, not enough to invade her space, just enough for her to feel his attention sharpen. “Be careful who you look at in a place like this,” he said. “Sometimes… they look back.” Anna’s breath trembled. And before she could respond, Romano walked past her, disappearing back into the dim corridor behind the VIP section. Jay exhaled dramatically. “Girl. You don’t know what you just started.” But Anna wasn’t listening. She could still feel Romano’s gaze on her skin. Still hear the depth of his voice. Still sense the warning… mixed with something else she couldn’t explain. Something about him felt dangerous. Yet something about him felt strangely familiar. And Anna realized one thing. Tonight was no longer just a night out. Her life had just shifted. And there was no going back.
