Chapter 3: School Day Surprises

558 Words
The morning sun spilled golden light across the Lumeria Academy courtyard as Elara hurried toward her first class. The events of the past two days weighed heavily on her mind. That delivery boy—Kael—kept appearing in her thoughts like a persistent melody she couldn’t ignore. And now, with the pendant around her neck and the mysterious vial on her desk, everything felt… different. As she rounded the corner near the east hall, a flash of blue caught her eye. She froze. There, balancing a stack of packages on his shoulder, was Kael. His green eyes met hers for the briefest moment before he darted behind a pillar and vanished. Elara’s heart thumped so loudly she was sure everyone could hear. She blinked, questioning reality. Was he following her? Or was it just coincidence? During the morning lessons, Elara found it difficult to concentrate. Every glance toward the window made her wonder if Kael might be outside, delivering something to the other students. She imagined him leaping between rooftops, a silent guardian of sorts, carrying parcels that held more than just mundane items. At lunch, her friends nudged her. “You’re daydreaming again, Elara,” Mira said, her voice teasing but kind. “Is it about… him?” Elara flushed. “He’s just… a delivery boy,” she replied, trying to sound casual. But deep down, she knew there was nothing ordinary about him. Just then, a soft thud echoed across the cafeteria. A small, wrapped package had landed beside her tray. She looked around, but no one seemed to notice. Carefully, she unwrapped it and found a single, delicate feather that shimmered in shades of violet and silver. A note accompanied it: “Some things are lighter than they seem. Watch closely.” Elara’s pulse quickened. How did he know where to find her so quickly? The feather pulsed faintly, like it was alive, and for a moment, it hovered above the table before settling gently in her palm. She slipped it into her pocket, feeling a thrill of excitement. The rest of the school day passed in a haze. Every time she left a classroom, she half-expected to catch a glimpse of him. And sometimes, in the periphery of her vision, she did—a flash of blue, a hint of green eyes—gone before she could confirm it. During art class, her teacher, Mrs. Lindar, was discussing perspective, but Elara’s mind was elsewhere. She imagined Kael delivering magical packages, each containing tiny wonders, traveling unseen along the rooftops of Lumeria. She realized she was smiling, unable to help it. As the final bell rang, Elara gathered her books, her thoughts buzzing. The courtyard was almost empty, save for a few lingering students and, in the distance, a figure carrying a stack of parcels. Kael. He looked up, and their eyes met once more. A smile tugged at the corners of his mouth, and he disappeared around the corner. Elara felt a shiver of anticipation. Tomorrow, she would uncover more of his secrets—or at least try to. She tucked the feather into her satchel and held the pendant close, feeling the faint warmth against her chest. One thing was certain: Lumeria felt infinitely more magical since Kael had entered her life, and she wasn’t sure she wanted it any other way.
