The Secret

Elena kept looking at Victoria. Victoria's polite smile never changed. But there was something in her eyes that made Elena uncomfortable. Before Elena could say anything, Adrian stepped closer. “Victoria,” he said calmly. Victoria looked at him. “What?” “Don't start.” Victoria gave a small laugh. “I haven't said anything.” Adrian's expression became serious. “That is exactly what worries me.” Elena looked between them. There was clearly something happening between the siblings. Something she didn't understand. Victoria turned her attention back to Elena. “So, Elena,” she said. “How are you enjoying being Mrs. Blackwood?” Elena forced a smile. “It's been... interesting.” Victoria smiled. “I can imagine.” Adrian placed his hand gently on Elena's back. “We should go.” Victoria raised an eyebrow. “Already?” “Yes.” “You barely arrived.” Adrian ignored her. He turned to Elena. “Come with me.” Elena followed him. As they walked away, she looked back. Victoria was still watching them. Her smile had disappeared. Elena's stomach tightened. Something was wrong. They stepped outside the building. The cold evening air hit Elena's face. Adrian walked toward the car without saying anything. Elena followed. When they got inside, she finally spoke. “Adrian.” He looked at her. “What?” “What's wrong with your sister?” His expression changed slightly. “Nothing.” Elena frowned. “Don't lie to me.” Adrian looked out the window. “You're asking too many questions.” “I think I have the right to ask.” He turned toward her. “This marriage is supposed to be simple.” Elena crossed her arms. “It stopped being simple the moment your sister started looking at me like she knows something.” Adrian became silent. Elena watched him carefully. “Does she know about the contract?” His eyes moved toward her. “No.” “Are you sure?” “Yes.” Elena wasn't convinced. The car began moving. For several minutes, neither of them spoke. Then Adrian finally said, “Victoria doesn't trust people easily.” “She doesn't trust me.” “She doesn't trust anyone.” Elena looked at him. “That's not what I saw.” Adrian sighed. “You're going to have to learn something about my family.” “What?” “Never believe everything they tell you.” Elena's heart skipped. “Why?” Adrian looked straight ahead. “Because everyone has their own reasons.” She wanted to ask more. But his phone suddenly rang. Adrian answered. “Hello?” He listened. His face became cold. “Where?” There was a long pause. “Don't touch anything. I'm coming.” He ended the call. Elena noticed the change in him. “What happened?” Adrian didn't answer immediately. Then he looked at her. “Someone broke into my office.” Elena's eyes widened. “What?” “My security team found the door open.” “Was anything stolen?” “I don't know yet.” The car suddenly changed direction. Elena stared at him. “Are we going there?” “Yes.” “Adrian, isn't that dangerous? He looked at her. “Stay beside me.” His voice was serious. Elena nodded. A few minutes later, they arrived at Blackwood Enterprises. The building looked completely different from earlier. Security guards stood near the entrance. Employees were being questioned. Adrian stepped out of the car. Elena followed closely behind him. A security officer approached. “Mr. Blackwood.” “What happened?” “We found your office unlocked.” “Was anyone seen?” “No, sir.” Adrian's jaw tightened. “Check the cameras.” “We already did.” “And?” The officer hesitated. “The cameras stopped working for twelve minutes.” Adrian's eyes narrowed. “Twelve minutes?” “Yes.” Elena felt nervous. Someone had planned this. They entered the building. Adrian walked quickly toward the elevator. Elena followed. When they reached his office, Adrian stopped. The door was slightly open. He pushed it slowly. Everything looked normal. His desk was still there. His computer was untouched. Nothing appeared missing. Then Elena noticed something. “Adrian.” He turned. “What?” She pointed toward his desk. There was a small white envelope sitting on it. Adrian's expression changed. He walked toward it. Elena followed. “Don't touch it,” he said. He opened it carefully. Inside was a single piece of paper. Adrian read it. His face became pale. Elena looked at him. “What does it say?” He didn't answer. “Adrian?” He slowly folded the paper. Then he looked at Elena. “It says…” He stopped. “What?” His eyes met hers. “I know about your wife.” Elena's heart stopped. She stared at him. Someone knew about their marriage. But the question was— How much did they know? To be continued…
