Elena stared at Adrian.
Her heart was beating fast.
“Who sent that message?” she asked.
Adrian looked at the paper in his hand.
“I don't know.”
“But someone knows about our marriage.”
“I know.”
“Then we need to find out who.”
Adrian looked at her.
“You're right.”
For the first time, Elena saw something different in his eyes.
Fear.
Adrian Blackwood looked afraid.
She stepped closer.
“What are you not telling me?”
He remained silent.
“Adrian.”
He finally looked at her.
“There are things about my family that you don't understand.”
“Then explain them to me.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because the more you know, the more dangerous this becomes.”
Elena's heart sank.
“Dangerous?”
Adrian nodded.
“Someone has been trying to destroy my family for years.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“You don't know?”
“I have my suspicions.”
Elena looked at the envelope.
“And you think this person knows about us?”
“Yes.”
“Why would they care about our marriage?”
Adrian didn't answer.
Elena noticed his silence.
“You chose me because of this, didn't you?”
His eyes met hers.
“What do you mean?”
“You didn't choose me only because you needed a wife.”
Adrian's expression became serious.
“Elena…”
“Tell me the truth.”
He looked away.
She knew it.
There was something else.
Something he had never told her.
Before Adrian could answer, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face immediately changed.
“Who is it?” Elena asked.
“Victoria.”
He answered.
“Hello?”
Victoria's voice came through the phone.
“Adrian, where are you?”
“At the office.”
“Is Elena with you?”
Adrian glanced at Elena.
“Yes.”
There was silence.
Then Victoria spoke again.
“Don't tell her anything.”
Elena's eyes widened.
She could hear Victoria's voice clearly.
Adrian looked at her.
“Why?”
“Just trust me.”
The call ended.
Elena stared at him.
“Why did she say that?”
Adrian didn't answer.
“Adrian, what does your sister know?”
He slowly put his phone away.
“I don't know.”
Elena shook her head.
“You're both hiding something from me.”
“I am trying to protect you.”
“I don't need protection. I need the truth.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“Elena, listen to me.”
She looked at him.
“Until I know who is behind this, stay away from my family's problems.”
“But I'm your wife.”
Adrian froze.
The words seemed to affect him.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then he quietly said,
“That's exactly why I'm worried.”
Elena's heart skipped.
She looked into his eyes.
For the first time, his cold expression disappeared.
He looked genuinely concerned about her.
Then suddenly—
The office lights went out.
Elena gasped.
“Adrian?”
He immediately moved in front of her.
“Stay behind me.”
The room became completely dark.
Then they heard a sound.
A door opening.
Someone was inside the office.
Adrian reached for Elena's hand.
“Don't move.”
Elena held his hand tightly.
Footsteps slowly approached them.
One step.
Then another.
Elena's heart raced.
“Adrian…”
“I've got you.”
The footsteps stopped.
Silence filled the room.
Then a voice whispered from the darkness.
“You should never have married her.”
Elena's blood ran cold.
Adrian's grip tightened around her hand.
He knew that voice.
