He came back

710 Words
Amara’s heart pounded so loudly, she was sure everyone could hear it. Footsteps echoed in the hallway. Each step felt heavier than the last. Then he appeared. “Amara…” That voice. The same voice that once made her feel safe… now made her chest tighten. Daniel Wright stood at the entrance of the living room, his eyes searching desperately until they landed on her. Relief flooded his face. “Thank God,” he breathed. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you.” Amara didn’t move. Didn’t speak. Didn’t even blink. All the pain from last night came rushing back like a storm. “You have a lot of nerve showing up here,” she said finally, her voice cold. Daniel flinched. “I know… I know how it looked, but” “How it looked?” she cut in sharply. “You proposed to another woman in front of me.” “It wasn’t real!” he said quickly. Silence. Amara stared at him. “…What?” “It was a setup,” Daniel continued, stepping closer. “My family forced me. That engagement means nothing to me. You’re the one I love.” Her chest tightened. For a second… just a second… She wanted to believe him. But then “You expect me to believe that?” she said, her voice shaking with anger. “You humiliated me in front of everyone!” “I was trying to protect you!” “By breaking my heart?!” Before Daniel could respond a calm voice cut through the tension. “She’s not interested.” Both of them turned. Adrian stepped into the room, his presence instantly shifting the atmosphere. Cold. Dominant. Unshakable. Daniel frowned. “And you are?” Adrian didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he walked over to Amara……and gently pulled her closer. Her breath hitched. “Her boyfriend,” he said. The room went silent. Daniel’s face darkened. “…What?” Amara’s heart raced. She could feel Adrian’s hand resting firmly on her waist. Warm. Possessive. Real. “This is a joke, right?” Daniel laughed bitterly. “Amara, tell him to stop.” She opened her mouth… But no words came out. “Amara?” Daniel’s voice softened. “You wouldn’t move on this fast. Not with someone like him.” Something inside her snapped. Someone like him? Slowly… she looked up at Adrian. Then back at Daniel. And in that moment she made her choice. “I’m not joking,” she said quietly. Daniel froze. “I’m with him now.” The words felt strange on her tongue. But also empowering. Daniel shook his head. “No. No, I don’t believe this. Amara, look at me. We were going to get married.” “Were,” she corrected. His eyes filled with desperation. “Please… don’t do this. I made a mistake. I’ll fix everything, I promise.” Amara’s heart clenched. But then she remembered the ring. The crowd. The humiliation. “I deserved better,” she said softly. “And now I have it.” Adrian’s grip on her waist tightened slightly. Almost like approval. Daniel’s expression hardened as he turned to Adrian. “You think you’ve won?” he said coldly. “You don’t even know her.” Adrian’s lips curved into a faint smirk. “I know enough.” Tension filled the room like a storm ready to explode. “Stay away from her,” Daniel warned. Adrian’s eyes darkened. “Or what?” For a moment, it looked like Daniel might actually lose control. But instead he turned back to Amara. “This isn’t over,” he said quietly. “I won’t give up on you.” And just like that… He left. Silence. Heavy. Thick. Suffocating. Amara slowly pulled away from Adrian. Her heart was still racing. “I… I didn’t plan that,” she said. “I know,” Adrian replied calmly. She looked at him. “Why did you help me?” He met her gaze. This time, there was something different in his eyes. Something deeper. “Because,” he said quietly, “He doesn’t deserve you.” Her breath caught. But neither of them realized this wasn’t the end. It was just the beginning of a war.
