Say it again

The entire room went silent. Adrian’s father stood at the top of the stairs, his sharp eyes fixed on Amara like she didn’t belong in his world. Because in his eyes… She didn’t. “…Who is this woman?” he repeated, his voice calm but heavy with authority. Amara felt her chest tighten. This wasn’t like Vanessa. This was different. This man had power. Real power. Before she could speak Adrian stepped forward. “She’s my girlfriend.” Murmurs spread across the room. Shock. Disbelief. Judgment. His father slowly walked down the stairs, each step echoing like a warning. When he reached them, his gaze never left Amara. “Your girlfriend?” he repeated. Then, coldly“Since when?” Adrian didn’t hesitate. “Long enough.” That wasn’t good enough. Everyone could feel it. His father stopped right in front of Amara. Up close, his presence was even more intimidating. “What’s your name?” he asked. “…Amara,” she replied, forcing her voice not to shake. “Amara,” he repeated slowly. Like he was testing how it sounded. Then “What family are you from?” The question hit harder than expected. Amara froze. “I” “She’s with me,” Adrian cut in sharply. “That wasn’t my question,” his father replied without even looking at him. Tension. Thick. Suffocating. Amara swallowed. “I’m not from a wealthy family,” she said honestly. Whispers. Judgment. Exactly what she expected. His father’s expression didn’t change. If anything it got colder. “I see,” he said. Then, without warning he turned to Adrian. “This is unacceptable.” The words echoed. Unacceptable. Amara felt it like a slap. But before she could react Adrian spoke. “I wasn’t asking for your approval.” Gasps filled the room. No one spoke to him like that. No one. His father’s eyes darkened. “You will not embarrass this family.” “I’m not embarrassed,” Adrian replied calmly. The air felt like it might explode. Then Vanessa stepped forward. Perfect timing. Of course. “Uncle,” she said sweetly, “I think Adrian is just confused.” Her eyes slid toward Amara. “This… situation won’t last.” Amara clenched her fists. She had had enough. “I’m not a situation,” she said firmly. The room went quiet again. Vanessa raised an eyebrow. “Oh?” Amara lifted her chin. “I’m the woman he chose.” Silence. Heavy. Stunning. For a second even Adrian looked surprised. Then slowly… A faint smile touched his lips. Vanessa’s expression hardened. “You’re bold,” she said. “Someone has to be,” Amara replied. That did it. Vanessa stepped closer, her voice dropping low. “You think you can stand here and compete with me?” Amara didn’t step back. “I’m not competing,” she said. Vanessa smirked. “You should be.” Before things could escalate Adrian moved. He stepped forward and pulled Amara closer to him. Firm. Possessive. Clear. “Enough,” he said coldly. Then he did something no one expected. He looked directly at his father… And said “She’s not going anywhere.” Shock. Real shock. “And if that’s a problem,” Adrian continued, “Then you’ll have to deal with it.” The room felt like it stopped breathing. His father stared at him. Long. Hard. Dangerous. Then finally “…We’ll discuss this later.” Not approval. But not rejection either. He turned and walked away. The tension slowly began to fade but the damage? Already done. Vanessa leaned closer to Amara one last time. “This isn’t over,” she whispered. Then she walked away. Silence returned. Amara let out a shaky breath. “I think I just started a war,” she murmured. Adrian looked down at her. His expression unreadable. But his hand? Still holding her. “You didn’t start it,” he said quietly. “You just made it interesting.” Her heart skipped. But deep down they both knew the truth. This wasn’t just a contract anymore. It was becoming something far more dangerous.
