Chapter 31

Geraldine’s Point of View I glanced at Mike, who was clearly not in the mood anymore, and then shifted my eyes toward Rafayel, who had leaned casually against the wall. “Oh no, sorry,” I blurted out, stepping forward to approach him. But before I could take another step, Mike grabbed my wrist and pulled me close to him. My face bumped into his chest, and I froze in place. “What are you doing here, Rafayel?” Mike’s voice was flat, yet sharp. Rafayel raised his brow, almost amused. “I didn’t realize your wife was this strong, Michael. I came here because I had something important to tell you. But looking at you now, I think I’ll leave it for tomorrow. You seem… busy.” “You should know better,” Mike snapped coldly. “Didn’t I tell you not to flirt with my wife?” “I’m not,” Rafayel replied smoothly. His lips curved into a playful smirk as his eyes darted to me. “I only said something to her. Right, Mrs. Muller?” I felt his gaze burn through me, and my heart skipped. Mike’s eyes turned to me, hard and unreadable. My stomach dropped. He was studying me intently, silently asking for confirmation. “Let’s keep our little secret, Geraldine.” Rafayel winked at me before leaving the room, his footsteps echoing against the floor. What?! My chest tightened. He was making things even worse for me! When I turned back to Mike, the coldness in his eyes nearly pierced through me. “Mike… why are you looking at me like that?” My voice trembled. Without answering, he tightened his hold on my wrist and dragged me into his office. My back hit the wall with a soft thud, and my eyes widened. “You were laughing with him,” he said, his tone void of emotion. Wait. He saw us? Since when had he been watching Rafayel and me? “You want him?” His words landed like sharp knives. My lips parted in shock. I immediately shook my head, desperate to make him understand. “Mike, what are you talking about? He only walked with me to your office. That’s all. I’m not the type of woman who would go looking for another man, especially when I already have a husband.” He stared at me in silence, his dark eyes probing mine. And I couldn’t help but remember what Rafayel had said earlier about his mother. I reached for his hand, gently holding it as if to calm the storm brewing inside him. “Please, believe me. I would never cheat on you. I hate that kind of thing,” I whispered earnestly. And it was the truth. I despised betrayal, despised abandonment. That was why I had saved him on the day of his wedding—because I couldn’t stand watching someone being discarded like trash. Love… what was that even? I had never truly felt it. I didn’t know how to show it either. I had no experience in the matter. Which was why, whenever I carried out missions and left behind those who fell for me, I felt nothing. No guilt, no sadness. Except now. Except with him, the man standing right in front of me. Mike pulled away, sighing heavily before grabbing a bottle of beer and pouring it into his glass. I quickly stepped forward and stopped him, my hand on his arm. “Don’t drink yet. You haven’t eaten.” “What does it matter to you if I drink or not?” His words were laced with ice. I knew this side of him. Cold. Detached. So different from the man I first met. Now I was beginning to see his true self. Slowly, I released his hand and closed my eyes, taking a deep breath. He was my husband, wasn’t he? And I wouldn’t back down this easily. A man should also listen to his wife. “Honey, will you still drink that?” I asked calmly. He froze. His hand halted midway, and then, almost reluctantly, he set the glass down on the table. He turned away from me, silent. A small smile formed on my lips. At least he listened. At the doorway, he paused, his back still to me. “Aren’t you going to eat?” I blinked, surprised by his words. Then, I couldn’t help it—I smiled wider and hurried toward him. Finally, a breakthrough. We left his office together, walking side by side toward the dining room. His face, however, remained impassive, his steps steady. He never once showed emotion, not even the smallest flicker. When we reached the dining room, the table was already set. Just as before, he dismissed everyone from the room. As he picked up his spoon to serve himself, I quickly stopped him. “Wait, honey. We need to test it first. What if there’s poison?” His brow furrowed at my words. I picked up the spoon and was about to take a bite when he caught my wrist again. “What do you think you’re doing?” His voice was sharp. “I’m just testing the food, in case there’s poison.” “And what if there is? Do you want to get hurt? What are you thinking?” His eyes blazed with frustration. “Well, isn’t that part of a wife’s duty?” I said matter-of-factly. “Don’t worry about poison. I grew up in the countryside. I’m used to it.” “What?” His eyes widened in disbelief. “That is not a wife’s job.” I stiffened. His words stunned me. “If not… then what is a wife’s duty?” He didn’t answer. Instead, he pulled out his phone and called Sister Cooker. When she arrived, he instructed her to taste the dishes one by one. “There’s no poison, Master,” she confirmed after trying everything. “Good. You may leave.” “Yes, Master.” She left, and I was left frowning, arms crossed. “Sit down. Let’s eat.” His command broke through my thoughts. Instead of obeying immediately, I took the initiative to serve the food onto his plate. He watched me silently, his expression unreadable. I met his gaze with a smile. Whatever it took, I would earn your trust, Mike. And that was a promise. ***** LMCD22
