The Uninvited Guest

The doors didn’t creak. They slammed. Aria jerked back as cold air flooded the room, carrying the scent of blood and rain. Kane moved faster than she could track, putting himself between her and the entrance in one fluid motion. His eyes were pure gold now, pupils blown wide. “Out,” he growled, voice not entirely human. “Now.” But she didn’t move. Couldn’t. Because the figure in the doorway wasn’t a stranger. “Hello, brother.” The voice was low, amused, and wrong in a way that made Aria’s teeth ache. A man stepped inside, drenched from the storm, silver hair clinging to his jawline. His eyes - identical to Kane’s - swept over her like she was a problem to be solved. Darian Blackthorn. The second son. The one everyone said died five years ago. Kane’s jaw clenched. “You’re not welcome here.” Darian smiled, slow and sharp. “Neither are you, apparently. Running a pack from a city penthouse? Mother would be ashamed.” His gaze flicked back to Aria. “And who’s this? The little Omega everyone’s talking about?” Aria felt the mate bond flare, hot and possessive. Kane’s hand shot out, grabbing her arm and pulling her behind him. The motion was protective. Instinctive. “Watch your mouth,” Kane said quietly. Too quietly. Darian laughed. “Or what? You’ll reject her too? Like you rejected me?” He took a step forward, and the temperature in the room dropped ten degrees. “You think you can keep her hidden, Kane? The whole pack knows. They’re already choosing sides.” Aria’s mind raced. Pack knew. Sides. This wasn’t just about her anymore. Kane’s wolf was close to the surface. She could see it in the way his muscles coiled, in the low rumble vibrating his chest. “This is between you and me, Darian. Leave her out of it.” “Can’t.” Darian’s smile turned cruel. “She’s the key, brother. To everything.” Before Kane could answer, Darian pulled something from his coat - a silver chain with a pendant shaped like a crescent moon. Aria’s pendant. The one her father gave her on her 16th birthday. Her breath caught. “How did you—” “Your father gave it to me,” Darian said. “The night he betrayed Kane’s father. He told me to keep it safe. For when the time was right.” Lies. It had to be lies. But the pendant felt warm against her skin, like it recognized him. Kane went still. Too still. “Aria,” he said, not looking at her. “Leave. Now.” She should have listened. But before she could move, Darian tossed the pendant to her. She caught it automatically, and the moment her fingers closed around it - Pain. Sharp, blinding, familiar. Memories that weren’t hers flooded in. Her father’s face, panicked in the dark. Kane’s father on his knees. The word traitor spat like a curse. And then - blood. So much blood. Aria dropped to her knees, gasping. Darian knelt beside her, voice soft. “Welcome to the truth, little Omega.” Kane moved. And this time, he didn’t stop himself.> Thanks for reading Chapter 7! If you want to see what happens when Kane loses control, hit Follow so you don’t miss Chapter 8.
