NO ESCAPE

801 Words
Aria woke up to the smell of pine and smoke. Her head pounded like she’d been hit with a rock. The room around her was dark, stone walls lit only by a single torch flickering in the corner. She wasn’t in her cell anymore. The bed beneath her was soft. Too soft. Wolf-silk sheets. The kind only Alphas could afford. And the mark on her wrist— It was glowing. A faint gold light pulsed beneath her skin, matching the rhythm of her heartbeat. Every pulse sent heat crawling up her arm and straight to her chest. The bond. The door creaked open. Alpha Kael stepped inside, his silver eyes scanning her like she was prey he hadn’t decided to kill yet. He was shirtless, scars cutting across his chest, muscles tense like he was holding himself back from something. “You’re awake,” he said. His voice was low. Dangerous. Aria sat up instantly, pulling the sheet around her. “Where am I? Why am I in your room?” “In my chambers. It’s safer here.” He stopped three feet from the bed. “The bond won’t let me be far from you. If you die, I die. If I die, you die.” Aria’s blood ran cold. “That’s not possible.” “It is. And it’s why you’re not leaving this pack tonight.” She laughed, but it came out sharp and broken. “You think I’ll just accept this? That I’ll stay here and be your little prisoner?” Kael’s jaw tightened. “I don’t think anything, Aria. I know this bond is real. And I know you feel it too, even if you hate me.” “I don’t feel anything for you except hate.” Liar. Her heart was pounding too fast. The mark burned when he stepped closer. Her skin felt like it was on fire where he was looking at her. Kael exhaled slowly, like he was fighting himself. “Then hate me all you want. But you’re not running from this. Not from me. Not from what we are.” Aria swung her legs over the bed and stood. Her knees shook, but she didn’t let him see it. “I’m not yours, Alpha.” She moved for the door. Kael moved faster. One second he was across the room. The next, his hand was on her wrist, his thumb brushing over the glowing mark. Heat exploded through her body, and Aria gasped. “Don’t,” he growled. “Don’t test me.” She yanked her hand back. “Or what? You’ll kill me?” “No.” His eyes darkened. “Or I’ll claim you properly. And then you’ll never escape me.” The words hit her like a slap. Aria’s chest rose and fell fast. For a moment, she saw something in his eyes—not cruelty. Not control. Need. And it terrified her. Because a small, traitorous part of her wanted it too. She shoved him back hard and ran. The corridor was a blur as she sprinted barefoot down the stone hallway. The bond pulled at her chest, but she ignored it. She had to get out. Had to breathe. Had to think without him clouding her mind. The exit was fifty feet ahead. The heavy oak doors of the Alpha’s wing. Twenty feet. Ten— Kael’s arm wrapped around her waist and yanked her back against his chest. “You’re mine now, Aria,” he whispered in her ear. “Whether you like it or not.” She struggled, kicking, hitting his chest with her fists. “Let me go!” “No.” The word was final. Absolute. Then the ground shook. A deep, guttural howl echoed through the night—so close it rattled the stone walls. Kael’s body went rigid. “Rogue pack,” he muttered. “They’re here.” Aria froze. Rogues meant blood. Rogues meant death. Kael released her and stepped back, his face hardening into the Alpha mask she hated. “Stay in this room. Lock the door. Don’t come out no matter what you hear.” He turned and strode toward the exit, grabbing a silver blade from the wall as he went. Aria grabbed his arm before he could leave. “Kael—” He stopped. Looked down at her. “If I die out there, the bond kills you too.” “I know.” “Then don’t die.” For the first time, Kael’s expression softened. Just a fraction. “I won’t.” He was gone a second later, the door slamming shut behind him. Aria stood there, breathing hard, the mark on her wrist burning like fire. Outside, the howling grew louder. And somewhere in the dark, Kael was fighting for both their lives.
