The couple were in the middle of their lunch when Alex’s phone suddenly rang. Without thinking, she fished it out of her bag, and answered without looking at the caller ID.
As for Jack, he had seen his wife take and make calls in his presence plenty of times that he didn’t find anything unusual— well, at least until Alex’s expression changed and turned unpleasant. But since she was still on the phone with someone, he had to wait before he could ask, not interrupting her conversation.
