Chapter 3:Mrs. Wolfe

The courthouse was almost empty. The clock on the wall read almost 9:47 PM, and the quiet building strangely unreal, like I had stepped into someone else’s life. Just a few hours ago, I was sitting in a restaurant wondering how to save my family. Now I was standing inside a marriage office beside one of the most powerful billionaires in the country. Waiting to become his wife. “This still feels insane.” I whispered under my breath. Adrian, standing beside me, looked completely calm. Like a man signing another business contract. A middle-aged woman behind the desk adjusted her glasses and looked between us. “Names?” She asked. “Adrian Wolfe.” He replied smoothly. Her eyebrows lifted slightly. Clearly, she recognized the name. “And you?” She asked me. “Lena Carter.” She typed something into her computer, glancing up at us again with curiosity. “You’re aware this is a legal marriage license?” She said carefully. I forced a small smile. “Yes.” Adrian didn’t even hesitate. “Of course.” She nodded slowly before sliding a document across the desk. “Sign here.” My heart started beating faster again. This was it. No turning back. I glanced sideways at Adrian. He looked relaxed, confident, completely certain about what he was doing. Meanwhile, my stomach felt like it was full of nervous butterflies. “Last chance,” I murmured quietly. Adrian turned his head slightly. “For what?” “To run.” The corner of his mouth moved faintly. “You’re free to leave .” His voice was calm Too calm “But if you walk away, “ he added quietly,” your father’s company collapses.” Really hit me again. Hard. I exhaled slowly and picked up the pen. My heart mead moved across the paper. LENA CARTER Adrian signed immediately after. ADRIAN WOLFE The woman stamped the document. “That’s it.” She said. Just like that No ceremony No flowers No vows No romance Only paperwork She handed us the marriage certificate. “Congratulations,” she said politely. The word echoed strangely in my ears. Adrian took the document and slid it into a folder. Then he turned towards me. “Mrs Wolfe.” The title made my stomach flip. “That’s going to take some getting used to,” I muttered. Adrian didn’t respond. Instead, he checked the time in his watch. “We should go.” Outside, the night air felt cool and refreshing. A sleek black car was waiting near the curb. A driver stepped out and opened the door immediately. “Good evening Mr. Wolfe.” Adrian nodded. “Home.” Home. The word made me pause. Because it wasn’t my home. It was his. I slid into the car beside him, suddenly feeling very aware of the new reality I had just stepped into. The city light flashed past the window as we drove in silence. Finally, I glanced at him. “So…now what?” Adrian leaned back slightly. “Now you move into my house.” “You mean your mansion,” I corrected. He didn’t argue. “How big is it?” I asked cautiously. “You’ll see.” That wasn’t comforting. The car drove through a pair of massive iron gates about twenty minutes later. My jaw slowly dropped. The driveway alone was bigger than the entire street where my family lived. “Are you serious?” I whispered. The mansion in front of us looked like something from a movie. Tall white columns. Massive glass windows. Beautiful gardens surrounding the entire property. Lights glowing warmly inside. “This is your house?” I asked. “Yes.” I stared at him. “You live here alone?” “Yes.” The car stopped. A group of staff members stood waiting near the entrance. My heart started racing again. “This is where the pretending begins,” Adrian said quietly. The driver opened the door. Adrian steeped out first before offering his hand to help me. I hesitated. Then took it. The staff immediately bowed their heads slightly. “Welcome home, Mr. Wolfe.” Adrian’s hand tightened slightly around mine. “And this,” he said calmly, “is my wife.” The word echoed through the entrance hall. Several of the staff worker looked shocked. I couldn’t blame them. I was shocked too. A woman in a neat uniform stepped forward. “Welcome, Mrs. Wolfe,” She said politely. Mrs. Wolfe. Hearing it out loud made everything suddenly feel very real. Adrian slightly closer to me and murmured quietly. “Smile.” I forced one. He glanced down at me briefly. “Good.” He said softly. Then he looked back at the staff. “Prepare the master bedroom.” I choked. “The what?” Adrian didn’t even blink. “The master bedroom.” My face burned instantly. “You mean…one room?” His grey eyes met mine calmly. “To everyone in this house,” he said quietly. “We’re a married couple.” My heart skipped nervously. “And married couple,” Adrian finished, “ share a room.” Suddenly, I had a terrifying feeling. Living with Adrian Wolfe for one year was going to be a lot more complicated than I thought. And this was only the first night.
