Chapter 5: The Morning After

753 Words
Sunlight spilled through the tall glass windows, warming the enormous bedroom. For a moment, I didn’t move. The bed beneath me was far too soft, the room far too quiet. Then reality slowly returned. The mansion. The contract. The marriage. I sat up suddenly. “Oh my God…” I was married to Adrian Wolfe. I rubbed my face, trying to process the situation. Everything still felt unreal, like some strange dream I would wake up from. Except I didn’t wake up. The bedroom door opened quietly. A young g woman stepped inside carrying a tray. She froze the moment she saw me sitting up. “Oh—Good morning, Mrs. Wolfe.” The title hit me again. Mrs. Wolfe. “Good morning,” I replied awkwardly. She walked toward the bed and placed the tray on a small table nearby. “Mr. Wolfe asked us to bring breakfast.” I glanced at the tray. Fresh fruit. Coffee Pastries Eggs This was definitely not the kind of breakfast I was used to. “Where is he?” I asked “He’s already at work.” Of course he was. “What time is it?” “Eight o’clock.” I blinked in surprise. “He left that early?” “Yes, ma’am.” That man really didn’t waste time. “Also,” she added, “Your stylist will arrive in an hour.” I groaned quietly. “Already?” She smiled politely. “Mr. Wolfe said your schedule begins today.” My schedule. I had a feeling my life had just become extremely complicated. The woman left the room after that, leaving me alone with the breakfast tray. I slowly climbed out of bed and walked toward the giant window. The view outside was breathtaking. Gardens stretched across the property and beyond the gates. I could see the distant skyline of the city. Everything looked perfect. Too perfect. My phone suddenly buzzed on the table beside the bed. A message. From Adrian. My heart did a small, unexpected jump. I opened the message. Adrian: Good morning. I stared at the screen for a second. Then typed back. Me: Good morning. A new message appeared almost immediately. Adrian: “The debt for Carter Construction has been cleared. My breath caught. “What?” I quickly opened my email. Sure enough, there was a bank notification. The loans were paid. Every single one. My hands started shaking slightly. He actually did it. Adrian Wolfe had just saved my family’s company overnight. Emotion rushed through my chest. Relief. Gratitude. Shock. I quickly typed another message. Me: Thank you. There was a short pause before his reply came. Adrian: You held up your side of the deal. This was such a typical Adrian response. Still cold. Still practical But I couldn’t stop smiling slightly. Another message appeared. Adrian: You’ll meet my grandfather tonight. My smile disappeared instantly. Tonight?! I typed quickly. Me: You mean the grandfather we are supposed to convince that we are happily married? His reply came seconds later. Adrian: Yes. My stomach flipped nervously. This was the real test. Pretending in front of the staff was one thing. Pretending in front of his family was something else entirely. Another message popped up. Adrian: My assistant will prepare you. Prepare me? That sounded terrifying. Me: Should I be worried? There was a longer pause this time. Then his answer came. Adrian: Probably. I groaned and dropped the phone onto the bed. “Great.” My fake marriage had officially begun. And tonight, I had to convince the grandfather of one of the most powerful billionaires in the country that I was madly in love with him. No pressure. None at all. Just as I was finishing my coffee, the bedroom door opened again. Two stylish-looking women stepped inside carrying several clothing bags. One of them smiled brightly. “Good morning, Mrs. Wolfe.” I had a feeling I'd hear the name a lot. “I’m your stylist,” She said cheerfully. Then she glanced around the massive room before clapping her hands excitedly. “Alright, ladies,” she said to her assistants. “We have a billionaire’s wife to transform.” I stared at them nervously. Something told me today was going to be exhausting. And tonight, tonight might be even worse. Because for the first time, signing the contract, one dangerous thought crossed my mind. What if pretending to love Adrian Wolfe became harder than I expected? What if I started to enjoy it?
