Chapter 9: The Night She Was Sold

737 Words
That night didn’t arrive quietly. It settled in like something final—heavy, cold, and impossible to escape. The air outside carried a sharp chill, brushing through the silent street and slipping between broken fences and tired rooftops. Even the moon stayed hidden behind drifting clouds, as though it refused to witness what was about to happen. Inside the house, no one spoke. The silence pressed down on everything, thick and suffocating, making even the smallest movement feel too loud. Aria stood near the door, her small bag clutched tightly in her hands. Her fingers curled around the worn fabric as if letting go would mean losing the last piece of herself she still owned. Inside it were only a few clothes and an old photograph she had carried for years. It was faded now, the edges bent and softened from being held too often. Her mother. Her little brother. A time when things had not felt this broken. She didn’t know why she brought it. Maybe she needed proof that she had once belonged somewhere. Mrs. Brooke held her hand tightly, her grip trembling, as though she could keep her from leaving if she just held on long enough. “You don’t have to go,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “We’ll find another way.” Aria didn’t answer. Because they both knew the truth. There was no other way. Across the room, her adoptive father sat at the table, staring down at nothing, his silence colder than any anger he had ever shown. Then— A knock. Three sharp, deliberate hits against the door. Aria’s breath caught instantly. “They’re here,” her father muttered. Her mother shook her head weakly. “No… please… don’t open it…” But he was already standing. He didn’t hesitate. He didn’t even look back. The door opened. Three men stood outside. The one in front stepped forward, calm and composed, his dark eyes unreadable, his smile thin and unsettling. “Well?” he asked. “Did you make the right decision?” Aria’s father moved aside. “She’s ready.” The words landed like something final. Her mother gasped. “You monster!” But it didn’t matter. Nothing changed. Her little brother ran to her, wrapping his arms tightly around her waist. “Aria, don’t go!” he cried. She dropped to her knees immediately, pulling him into her arms, holding him as tightly as she could. “Be brave,” she whispered into his hair. “Take care of Mom for me.” “I don’t want to,” he sobbed. “I know…” She pressed a soft kiss to his forehead, holding on for just a moment longer. “I’ll come back for you.” She didn’t know if it was true. But he needed to believe it. Slowly, she stood. The man watching them looked bored, as though he had seen this too many times before. “Touching,” he said flatly. Then he pulled out an envelope and tossed it onto the table. Money spilled slightly from the top. Her father grabbed it immediately. Without looking at her. Without hesitation. And in that moment, Aria understood something clearly— She had never been his daughter. She had only ever been something to trade. “Let’s go,” the man said. Aria didn’t argue. She walked past them. The cold night air hit her skin instantly, sharp and unforgiving. Behind her, her mother screamed her name. But then— The door shut. And the sound disappeared. The car ride felt endless. Aria sat in the back seat, her hands resting stiffly in her lap as the city lights blurred past outside the window. Everything felt distant. Muted. Unreal. She didn’t cry. She didn’t speak. It was as if her mind had shut something off just to survive the moment. After a long while, the car slowed. Then stopped. Aria lifted her head. In front of her stood a large building, glowing under flashing neon lights. Music thumped faintly from inside, vibrating through the ground. A sign flickered above the entrance. MIDNIGHT LOUNGE. Her stomach tightened. The door opened. “Welcome to your new life.” Aria stepped out slowly. And for the first time that night— fear truly settled in. Because this time, there was no going back. And deep down, she knew— whatever waited behind those doors would change everything.
