CHAPTER 5

‎The sharp chatter of high society echoed off the soaring crystal chandeliers of the Grand Ballroom, blending with the rhythmic, elegant strains of a live string quartet positioned near the eastern alcove. ‎ ‎ Everywhere I looked, diamonds glittered under the warm amber lighting, and expensive silk gowns swept across imported French parquet floors. ‎ ‎It was a sea of powerful politicians, ruthless corporate moguls, and elite socialites who wore smiles as sharp and dangerous as surgical steel, all of them eager to network, scheme, and climb higher up the ladder of wealth. ‎ ‎And right at the center of it all, standing tall and imposing with his broad shoulders clad in an impeccably tailored midnight-blue tuxedo, was Angellio Blackthorn. ‎ ‎My hand rested lightly upon his forearm, tucked against the crook of his elbow in a posture that looked to the rest of the world like the picture of marital harmony and serene compliance. ‎ ‎ But underneath the heavy silk of my emerald-green backless gown, my muscles were coiled tight as a spring. My fingers gripped the fabric of his sleeve slightly harder than necessary every time another high-ranking executive approached us to offer obsequious congratulations and thinly veiled probes about the recent corporate restructuring. ‎ ‎"Mr. Blackthorn. And Mrs. Blackthorn, what an absolute vision," purred Julian Sterling, the aging CEO of Sterling Logistics, stepping forward with a glass of vintage champagne in hand. His watery eyes lingered on my face for a fraction of a second too long, a patronizing smile stretching across his lined, weathered face. ‎ ‎ "We were all quite surprised by the sudden... alliance between the Blackthorn empire and the remnants of the Pendleton estate. A bold acquisition, to say the least. Not many would take on such dead weight." ‎The air around us seemed to drop ten degrees instantly, the ambient noise of the ballroom suddenly feeling miles away. ‎ ‎Angellio didn't smile. His jaw locked into a hard, unyielding line, and the brilliant blue of his eyes hardened into chips of arctic ice. He didn't look at Sterling as an equal or a business peer; he looked at him like a predator evaluating an insect foolish enough to crawl directly into its web. ‎ ‎"An acquisition implies something lifeless purchased at a clearance auction, Julian," Angellio replied, his voice dropping into a low, velvet register that sent a shiver straight down my spine. ‎ ‎"I didn't acquire a business asset. I claimed my wife. And if I recall correctly, your own logistics contracts are currently dependent on the clearance codes routed directly through my firm's shipping hubs. ‎ ‎I'd suggest choosing your words with much more architectural precision before your next portfolio review, unless you'd prefer to liquidate your warehouses by the end of the quarter." ‎ ‎Julian’s face drained of color instantly, the smug expression vanishing into sheer panic. He swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing as he quickly nodded his head in deep submission. "Of course... forgive me, Angellio. A poor choice of phrasing on my part. Good evening to you both, Mrs. Blackthorn." ‎ ‎With a hasty, trembling murmur, the older man turned on his heel and disappeared back into the crowded room faster than a ghost vanishing at dawn, terrified of provoking the titan standing beside me. ‎ ‎I let out a soft, controlled breath, turning my face slightly toward Angellio as the string quartet transitioned into a slower, more haunting waltz. ‎ ‎"You didn't have to threaten him quite so publicly," I murmured, keeping my voice low and steady so only he could hear over the music. "Half the ballroom is staring at us right now, wondering if you're going to devour them next." ‎ ‎Angellio turned his gaze down toward me, the icy hostility melting away from his features in an instant, replaced by that intense, consuming warmth that always felt entirely too heavy, too overwhelming to carry. ‎ ‎"Let them stare, Lavigne," he whispered softly, his free hand rising to gently rest against the small of my back, his thumb pressing firmly through the silk of my dress right against my spine, anchoring me to him. "They need to understand the perimeter. No one looks at what is mine without paying a toll." ‎ ‎"I am not a piece of property, Angellio," I shot back, though the familiar bite in my tone lacked its usual venom, softening under the intoxicating weight of his proximity and the scent of his cologne. "I am standing right here beside you, fully capable of handling a greasy executive who thinks he can patronize me." ‎ ‎"I know you are, little bird," he murmured, his lips brushing dangerously close to my ear as he pulled me a fraction closer, guiding me out toward the center of the polished dance floor as the waltz truly began to swell around us. "You're fiercer than any of them. That's why I had to make sure no one else ever got their claws into you." ‎ ‎As we began to move in rhythm with the music, the chatter of the ballroom faded into a dull, distant hum. I rested my hand against his broad chest, feeling the steady, powerful thud of his heartbeat beneath his shirt. For all his ruthlessness, for all the terrifying cages he had built around my life, there was an anchor here that I couldn't deny. He had rebuilt my gallery, protected my name from the scavengers of the corporate world, and stood before the elite of the city like a wall of iron. ‎ ‎Yet, deep down, the ghost of my old independence still whispered in the back of my mind, reminding me of the freedom I had lost. How long could I exist inside this gilded orbit before I forgot how to fly on my own? ‎ ‎Angellio must have felt the tension shift in my posture, because his grip tightened imperceptibly, his gaze locking onto mine with an absolute, unyielding intensity as we spun beneath the crystal lights. ‎ ‎"Don't wander off in your mind, Lavigne," he whispered, his voice a low, commanding demand that wrapped around my soul. ‎ ‎ "You're here with me. And tomorrow... everything changes anyway." ‎ ‎My brow furrowed slightly as we turned in time with the music, a sudden sense of unease washing over me. "What happens tomorrow?" ‎ ‎A dark, enigmatic smile touched the corners of his mouth, but he offered no further explanation, spinning me smoothly into the next measure of the dance while the world watched on in silent awe.
