Chapter 5: That Girl Su Lin

1447 Words
In the blink of an eye, a week passed. Ling Chen’s life remained the same: going to work and coming home every day, with iced beer and braised snacks—nothing ever changed. That was until one morning, when a phone call jolted him awake from his sleep. “Boss, I’m taking the day off today, so I won’t be coming to work. You—” “Get your a*s over here right now! If you don’t show up, my shop will be torn down any minute!” Hearing how urgent his boss sounded, Ling Chen didn’t dare delay—this was about his job, after all. He quickly splashed some water on his face, skipped brushing his teeth, and rushed straight to the company. The courier company where he worked was in the old town, not far from his place—just a ten-minute walk away. When he reached the company gate, Ling Chen froze before he even stepped in. Outside the building, more than thirty men in suits stood around, their faces cold and menacing, exuding an intimidating aura. “Where did all these bodyguards come from?” he muttered to himself, scanning the area. Suddenly, his eyes narrowed—he noticed a white Maserati parked by the street. “So it’s her!” Ling Chen immediately figured it out. So that long-legged girl had come here to pick a fight—she was really persistent… no, more like petty. Women really were petty creatures who held grudges. “You finally showed up.” Hearing that gritted voice, Ling Chen didn’t even need to think to know who it was. He turned around, looked at Su Lin walking out of the company, and greeted her with a grin: “If it isn’t Miss Su.” After speaking, he glanced at the crew-cut young man beside Su Lin and said, “If I’m not mistaken, your name is Nan Ronghao, right?” “You have a good memory,” Su Lin said coldly. “Then you should also remember what you said to me the other day.” Ling Chen pretended to think, “I said a lot of things that day. I don’t know which one you’re referring to—maybe you can jog my memory?” Nan Ronghao blurted out, “You said my cousin would have sons without—” “Shut up!” Su Lin shot Nan Ronghao a fierce glare. If he weren’t her cousin, she would have slapped him right then. How could anyone be this stupid? Feeling his cousin’s murderous gaze, Nan Ronghao shrank his shoulders and quickly averted his eyes. Between his older sister and his cousin, both were people he couldn’t afford to offend. “Miss Su, you’re too narrow-minded,” Ling Chen said. “It was just a single sentence—why take it so seriously? Besides, you were the one in the wrong first, and now you’re here to trouble me. Where am I supposed to go to reason?” “How dare you call me narrow-minded?” Su Lin fumed. Clearly, this bastard had said something vicious—he’d even cursed her! No one had ever dared to talk to her like that since she was a child. Ling Chen’s eyes wandered to her plump chest, then he nodded seriously: “Your chest isn’t narrow, but I don’t know about your heart. To find out that, you’d have to take your clothes off.” This guy… Nan Ronghao’s mouth dropped open as he looked at Ling Chen. He actually dared to openly flirt with his cousin! With his cousin’s fiery temper, she was probably about to lose it. “You… you…” Su Lin pointed at Ling Chen, her cheeks flushing red with anger, unable to speak clearly. After catching her breath, she ground her teeth and snapped, “Ling Chen, you rogue! You think you’re good at fighting? I brought so many people here today—if you have the guts, take all of them down!” Ling Chen shrugged. It wasn’t surprising that she’d found his workplace through the courier’s delivery list and learned his name. Looking at the dozens of bodyguards closing in, he felt a twinge of frustration. He really didn’t want to fight these guys—it would be a waste of time and energy. “Everyone, let’s talk this through calmly. We’re all civilized people,” he said, forcing a friendly smile. “Cut the crap!” Su Lin snapped. “Today, either you get knocked down, or they do. You have no choice.” “There are so many of you, and only one of me. Isn’t that unfair?” “I just want to g**g up on you—so what? Do you have a problem with that?” Su Lin thought Ling Chen was getting scared, and a hint of pride crept into her heart. Nan Ronghao snickered secretly, looking at Ling Chen with an expression that said, “You’re doomed.” Daring to flirt with his cousin? He was digging his own grave—asking for death! “What a commotion this early in the morning. What’s everyone gathering around for? Hey, Brother Chen, why are you here?” Ling Chen turned his head and saw Jiang Hao walking through the crowd with a few of his underlings. “What are you doing here?” Ling Chen asked. Jiang Hao smiled, “Brother Chen, don’t you remember? I’m in charge of this street now.” Ling Chen slapped his forehead—he’d almost forgotten. The Wuli Street Jiang Hao had taken over from Zhao Zhengxiong was exactly this street. No wonder he hadn’t seen Jiang Hao these past few days—he’d been busy here. “Brother Chen, what are these guys here for?” Jiang Hao asked, noticing the bodyguards’ menacing looks. Ling Chen put on a wronged expression, “These guys came to pick a fight with me. They even want to g**g up on me.” “g**g up on you?” Jiang Hao’s lips curled into a cold smile as he looked at the thirty-odd bodyguards. “You guys have guts—daring to trouble my Brother Chen! You want to g**g up? Fine—I’ll show you what real ganging up looks like! Brothers, come out, all of you!” At his command, dozens of men poured out of the nearby billiard hall and game arcade. Adding Jiang Hao’s own underlings, there were more than seventy people in total. Those who had weapons grabbed them; those who didn’t picked up bricks from the ground. They surrounded the bodyguards in an instant. Su Lin and Nan Ronghao were stunned. This… the plot twist was too sudden! Nan Ronghao wanted to cry. If he’d known this would happen, he never would have come with his cousin to stir up trouble. “What are you afraid of?” Su Lin snapped at her bodyguards. “I paid good money to hire you professionals—can’t you even take on a bunch of hooligans?” The bodyguards were left speechless. They were empty-handed, while the other side had the upper hand in numbers and was armed with weapons and bricks. If a fight broke out, they would definitely be the ones to suffer. “Miss Su, let’s sit down and talk this through. We’re all civilized people,” Ling Chen said with a smile. “There’s no need for unnecessary conflict—it won’t do anyone any good.” Hearing this, Jiang Hao and his men snickered quietly. They’d been with Ling Chen long enough to know a little about his personality. He kept saying they were “civilized people,” but when it came to fighting, he was fiercer than anyone else. Su Lin saw the timid looks on her bodyguards’ faces and knew she wouldn’t get any advantage today. She could only leave in frustration. “Ling Chen, don’t be so happy. I’ll make you pay sooner or later!” she snarled, then turned and stormed toward her car, holding back her anger. Nan Ronghao hurried after her, “Cousin, don’t leave me behind!” “Take a taxi back by yourself!” Su Lin ground out the words through her teeth, slammed the car door shut, and drove away, leaving Nan Ronghao standing there, dumbfounded. “How pitiful—your cousin just abandoned you like that,” Ling Chen walked over to him and shook his head sympathetically. Nan Ronghao tensed up, “W-what do you want? Let me warn you—if you dare touch a hair on my head, my older sister will never let you off!”
