Elara reported to the third floor the following morning exactly as ordered, standing outside the heavy doors of Kael's private wing with her stomach twisted into knots she could not fully explain.
A guard let her through without question, clearly already informed of the arrangement, and she stepped into a world entirely different from the servants' quarters she had grown accustomed to. The corridors here were wider, quieter, lined with tapestries far older and finer than anything displayed in the common halls. This was the heart of Ironclaw, the private domain of the alpha king himself, and she had no idea, standing there uncertain in the doorway, what exactly she was meant to do with herself.
"You will attend to the alpha's chambers," a stern-faced servant informed her curtly, appearing from a side corridor with an armful of linens shoved unceremoniously into Elara's arms. "His meals, his laundry, the upkeep of his study and private rooms. You answer to no one else in this wing except the alpha himself. Do not wander where you are not told to go."
Elara nodded, accepting the linens, and spent the rest of that first day learning the rhythms of a space that felt, despite its grandeur, somehow lonelier than the crowded servants' quarters she had left behind. Kael was absent for most of it, occupied with council business, and she moved through his private rooms alone, folding his clothing, arranging his study, aware with every task of an intimacy she had not asked for and did not know how to feel about.
His study smelled like him, she realized while dusting a shelf of old books, that same low, warm scent that made her wolf stir restlessly beneath her skin every time he came near. His bedchamber, when she finally worked up the nerve to enter it to change the linens, held the same scent even more strongly, and she found herself standing frozen in the doorway for a long moment before forcing herself forward, cheeks burning for reasons she refused to examine.
She did not see him until evening, when he returned to his chambers exhausted from a long day of council disputes, and found her kneeling by the hearth, coaxing a fire to life against the mountain chill that crept through even these finely appointed rooms after dark.
He stopped in the doorway, watching her for a long moment before she noticed him, something unguarded crossing his face that vanished the instant she turned and caught him at it.
"My lord," she said, rising quickly, brushing ash from her hands.
"The fire is fine," Kael said, voice rougher than he intended. "You may go for the night."
Elara hesitated. "Where am I meant to sleep, my lord? No one has told me."
Something flickered across his face, an oversight he had apparently not fully considered in his haste to bring her here. "There is a small chamber adjoining mine. It will do for now."
She said nothing, though her heart pounded strangely at the proximity that arrangement implied, and retreated to the small chamber he indicated, a modest room but a vast improvement over the crowded servants' quarters she had known for months, close enough to his own chambers that she could hear him moving about long into the night, restless, unable to settle, the same way she found herself unable to settle knowing he was so near.

Bianca learned of the arrangement the following morning, and the news landed like a struck match against dry kindling.
"She has been moved where," she demanded of the maid delivering her morning tea, voice sharp enough that the poor girl nearly dropped the tray entirely.
"To the alpha's private wing, my lady. As his personal servant. Word is she attends to his chambers exclusively now."
Bianca sat frozen for a long moment, fury building steadily beneath her carefully composed exterior. She had been denied his bed for weeks despite her title, despite her efforts, despite every calculated advance she had made in his study that evening. And now a slave, a mere Ashryn slave with whip scars still healing across her back, had been granted access to his private chambers that Bianca herself had been explicitly denied.
She dressed quickly, fury sharpening into purpose, and made her way directly to the council chambers where several of the elders had already gathered for their morning business.
"This is an outrage," she announced, sweeping into the room without waiting for permission to speak, drawing startled glances from Corvin and several other ministers seated around the long table. "I have just learned that the alpha has moved his Ashryn slave into his own private wing. Into rooms adjoining his own chambers."
A ripple of shock moved through the assembled council, exactly the reaction Bianca had hoped for.
"Surely you are mistaken," Corvin said carefully, though something uneasy already moved behind his eyes.
"I am not mistaken. I have it from three separate servants, all telling the same story." Bianca's voice rose, indignation sharpening every word. "I am his concubine, and I have never once been permitted past the outer doors of that wing. And yet a slave, the very daughter of the man who orchestrated our late alpha's murder, walks freely through his private chambers now. What message does this send, to this council, to the entire pack? What right does a slave have to privileges denied to a woman of noble blood?"
Maribel, seated near the head of the table, exchanged a troubled glance with Corvin. "This does require explanation," she said slowly. "Fetch the alpha. This council deserves to understand his reasoning."
Kael arrived perhaps twenty minutes later, summoned from his morning training, still faintly out of breath and clearly irritated at the interruption, and found the entire council staring at him with expressions ranging from concern to open suspicion.
"I am told," Corvin began carefully, "that the Ashryn slave has been relocated to your private wing, my lord. The council has concerns about the propriety of such an arrangement, particularly given Lady Bianca's position as your concubine."
Kael's jaw tightened, and for a long moment he said nothing, weighing something visibly behind his eyes, some final decision crystallizing after weeks of careful avoidance.
"The council's concerns are noted," he said finally, voice carrying easily across the silent room. "But I believe there has been a misunderstanding regarding her status that I intend to correct, effective immediately."
He paused, and Elara, who had been summoned along with the rest to stand quietly near the back of the chamber, felt her heart stop entirely in anticipation of whatever he intended to say next.
"As of this morning," Kael continued, voice hard and final, brooking no argument, "the woman known as Ash is no longer considered a slave of this household. She will be recognized henceforth as my personal maid, serving my chambers exclusively, with all the standing and protection that position affords within this palace."
The council chamber erupted into stunned murmurs, Corvin's mouth falling open slightly, Bianca's face draining of color before flooding with fresh, furious color moments later.
"My lord, this is—"
"This is my decision," Kael said, cutting Corvin off without hesitation, voice carrying the full weight of his authority. "If she were to remain simply a slave of this household, she would answer to any member of staff who commanded her, subject to any punishment any servant of higher standing chose to inflict. As my personal maid, she answers only to me. I have decided that arrangement better suits the household's needs going forward."
It was, Elara understood distantly, standing frozen near the back of that chamber, a careful legal fiction, a way of protecting her from exactly the kind of casual cruelty Petra and the other maids had subjected her to for weeks, dressed up in language cold enough that no one in that room could accuse him of softness even as he extended her something dangerously close to it.
Bianca's eyes found Elara's across the room, burning with a fury too raw to fully disguise, and Elara felt the weight of that gaze like a physical thing, understanding immediately that whatever fragile safety this new title afforded her, it had just made her a far more dangerous target in Bianca's eyes than she had ever been as a mere slave.
"This council will discuss the matter further," Maribel said carefully, though something in her tone suggested she, at least, understood the wisdom in Kael's reasoning even if she would never say so aloud.
"There is nothing further to discuss," Kael said. "The matter is decided."
He turned and left the chamber without waiting for further argument, and Elara followed at a respectful distance, her mind racing through everything that had just happened, elevated status, Bianca's fury, and underneath it all, a fragile, unfamiliar warmth at the knowledge that Kael had chosen, publicly, deliberately, to protect her, even if he had wrapped that protection in language cold enough to deny what it truly meant.
She did not yet know how much that single decision was about to cost both of them.
