Just Shake it Off

1948 Words
I thought of screaming, crying, and even fainting. My eyes were clouded for a second, blind to what was taking place. It was this feeling of being swayed back and forth before my body touched the ground again. After a series of blinking and squinting, I recognized my hand raised to the sky while I was laying down. There it was again, the strange orb, succumbing to my touch. It didn’t take a while for me to push myself up after realizing that I just touched a floating orb. Where am I? At the side of the river? But I was supposed to be over there, at the water. And this rock, it’s unlike any other- see, this one didn’t pay any attention to gravity. And its kind isn’t something I know of. Yes, I’m well aware of how I didn’t listen to any of my classes but I’m sure this gem isn’t anything I’ve seen before. The mixture of blue and red streaks was there, flashing and growing a little stronger than it was. My hand, did I do something when I touched it? I did something to provoke this, right? Like every other fantasy story, I’ve watched or read. I need time to process these things- me almost plunging to my death, a supernatural orb that out of logic, may have saved my life, and my reason for not running away as soon as I woke up. Before I even planned to decide, the winds grew stronger once again. This time, I didn’t only feel them, but I see them. Thick and stringy as clouds, they began to surround the glowing orb. As quickly as to how I fell down earlier, the winds began to take form.                                                                                      ~o~ When I was a child, before we went to Amihan, my mother would always stay up late at night because it was a pain getting me to fall asleep. I would always cry and stomp my feet, or at least she told me, for no apparent reason. Despite that, she did find a trick to get me quiet. She would sing me this song, a lullaby of some kind, about the winds.  Too bad I don’t remember any of it today, but she told me how magical of a moment it was for her. That every time she sang me the lyrics, I would finally close my eyes and dream. I wish I could hear it again, or back then- the times when I needed her by my side. But it was years ago, I’m supposed to be a grown-up now. I’m supposed to think of cash and responsibilities, how I’m gonna support my family and my own. If only I could spend a night in Mom’s arms again, and sing me the song that sounded like whispers from the winds.                                                                                      ~o~  Whispers, that’s what they were. This sensation, that’s how the air trickles under my ears. The winds around me continued to converge around the orb. In front of me, a figure appeared. 4- no, 5 rods of a cloudy mass protruding from the overall form. The shapes, they become clearer, more refined. What I’m seeing, it’s reaching out for me like a hand. The mass pulsed and rearranged. From it, I heard an echoing voice. This figure, it looks human or at least resembles people like us. I thought my ears were messed up, but I began to notice the speech. “Are you okay?” The cloudy mass asked with a masculine voice, while I am too bewildered to respond. The orb, or whatever makes up of these winds, just asked if I was okay. I assumed right, it did save me from the fall. But what do I say in return? “Wha-what?” I uttered. The word just slipped out of my tongue. “Human, you can see me right? Are you okay?” He asked again. This time, I can make out his face. He does look like a guy in his 20s, aside from the fact that he’s just a walking cloud. “Uhm, yeah sure. I mean, you were just an orb, and then here you are, a dude- some sort of a cloudy dude. You’re not gonna hurt me, right?” I nervously asked. But, his bluish eyes didn’t seem to have any malice hidden inside. Still, this whole situation remains anything but natural. “What are you? And why did you save me?” I asked, pulling myself up and making distance away from him. “Hmm, I thought the correct response for a human whenever someone did something good for them was to say thanks, thank you, merci, gracias, salamat, arigatou, danke-“ the cloudy guy looked up with a finger on his chin, then continued to say the word in different languages, I guess- I wouldn’t know. But the possibility of me thinking that this guy is just a human cloud is getting slim. That’s too weird of a reply from him. “-grazie or toda. Did I miss something? Oh, right, and mahalo. But anyway, I’m a wind spirit,” he proceeded to shake my hand with his soft ones,” and my name’s Mr. Breezy!” Breezy? So, what a wind spirit calls himself is a pun of himself. Not the weirdest thing today. The wind spirit, as what he refers himself to be, stood and stared at me. He raised both of his eyebrows as if he’s waiting for something from me. Oh right. “So, thanks Mr. Breezy. Uhm, I’m sorry, it’s just, I almost fell to my death and again, thanks for that, but you see, I still need time to process this, you understand that right? Mr. breezy the uhm, wind spirit?” The spirit seemed confused, like he wanted more of the conversation or something. Honestly, I’m too put off by the events that I just have to get away. I gave him a quick wave and turned around. I stepped carefully, going from side to side into the trees. Haven’t gone to these parts of the island but I can trust my sense of direction. Strange how I’m already forgetting what I just witnessed down the river. Only now did I realize that the envelope is still sealed by my arms. After making it back to the road, I began walking again, away from the Hudson Bridge. That stuff’s real, right? It did really happened. Shoot, he’s a spirit. I’ve always wanted to interview one, but I guess I can’t really handle the supernatural. My head is aching- can’t believe I almost fell. If it wasn’t for that stupid… the stupid wind. Wind spirit! It’s like the senses were awakening because of the sudden grasp of what really happened. There was no way the winds that took my screenplay were that strong, oh no. That fricking wind spirit, he must’ve caused my fall for reasons I can’t even imagine! I halted from my walk and looked back. From shock, I threw the envelope away as I was faced by Mr. Wind Spirit himself. “Hey you let go of this again,” he said, grabbing the envelope mid-air. “You were the reason why I almost died, weren’t you?” I pointed my finger at him, then snatched my screenplay back. “Alright human, there’s an explanation for this,” he said. So it is true. I stomped my feet and marched away. What a jerk! First, he caused the accident- a homicide if it’s what I’d call it, then pretended that he saved me from falling, then wanted me to become friends with him or whatever. A creep, that’s what he is. The winds passed then the orb with the cloudy mass appeared. “Wait human. Look I’m sorry.” He voiced out but I swooped him away. “I didn’t intend to let you fall.” He appeared again, but I leaped away. The cloudy mass then appeared in front of me, and completed the wind spirit’s form. “I can explain.” “Ok, what?” I grunted. I noticed two other people on the road, looking at me strangely. I returned a confused look. If there’s anything strange, they should look at this clump of clouds. Or, maybe they couldn’t see him. “Am I the only one who can see you?” I asked in annoyance. “Well, you are the only one who touched this orb,” the spirit said, pointing to the red and blue gem in his chest. Great, not only did he made a fool of me once but twice. i***t. “Oh, is that so? Then, I guess I’ll just ignore you like the rest of the world,” I sassed then walked straight into him. Turns out he really is made up of clouds. Alright, so I have this crazy, supernatural thing following me. But I also have this envelope that I haven’t had settled with. With all the danger that’s following me around, then the risks I have in mind earlier turn out to be a little thing. At least now, I’ll be able to mail my work. I made it to the mailbox. There’s a lot of people here now than it was earlier. Granted, I did rush my way here when the school bell had just rung. Folks from my grade are out here hanging around, doing friend stuff or something. While I’m out here being stalked by a fricking spirit. “Just tune it out,” I murmured, “He’ll be gone before I knew it,” I assured myself. I opened the chute of the mailbox and widened my eyes. “Hey, you ready to listen to my side of the story?” the spirit said smiling, his head the only thing visible from the mailbox. “What are you doing there?” I let out but remembered there were a lot of people around, so I went closer to him, making it look like I was just peeking something out of the box. Still better than being seen talking to myself. “What’s in the envelope? Come on human, tell me!” He urged. “This is none of your business! Now scoot over, I have to drop this off,” I grunted, teeth closed. “But, I wanted to ask you why that paper filled with papers is so important to you, and now, you’re going to leave it here with piles of other papers?” he said, whilst inside a mailbox. “Yes,” I cried, then dropped off my work and dropped down the chute. I clapped my hands together as if I just did a job well done. There was a banging from inside the box, but after that, just have to ignore it and sleep it off when I reach home. Maybe that time around, the winds won’t bother me anymore.
