Catherine and Isabella froze completely, eyes wide.
I forced the words out, my throat tight: "Actually, Carter is ..."
"Hey, why did you guys leave without me?"
I didn't even get to finish the sentence before Amy cut in, her voice laced with annoyance.
Catherine just shrugged, shuffled over a little, and made an empty spot for Amy beside her.
"Chill out, I didn't want Mia to be late. When it's your turn to confess to someone, I'll haul ass just as fast for you."
Amy didn't sit down.
Instead, she marched right up to me, lips poked out in a pout. "Mia, can you give this seat to me?"
Catherine and Isabella gaped at Amy, totally confused by her out-of-the-blue request.
"Hello? Mia's the one here to confess, what's your deal trying to steal her spotlight?"
"The game's about to start, c'mon, don't be a brat. Sit down already."
Before Amy could argue back, Catherine grabbed her arm and hauled her straight into the empty seat.
The overhead speakers had already started announcing the players.
Amy gritted her teeth so hard you could almost hear the grind, shot me a vicious glare, and finally plopped down, all huffy and reluctant.
I had to bite back a laugh.
She was the one who begged me to come watch her meet up with her online crush in person, for crying out loud.
Now she was over here throwing a fit like I was the one in the wrong.
Just then, Carter stepped onto the rink, decked out head to toe in his ice hockey gear.
The commentator was one of Carter's best friends, so when he introduced Carter, he made a point of panning the jumbotron camera right to me.
Thanks to Amy, the whole school knew I was crushing on Carter and shooting my shot.
She'd kept saying that when a girl makes the first move on a guy, it's practically a cakewalk.
The more loud and dramatic you are about it, the better it works, she'd insisted.
So I'd made posts about it on the school forum, and even showed up in a few campus viral videos.
Everyone and their mom knew that Mia from the History Department was chasing Carter from the Business School.
"Woohoo!"
Catherine and Isabella were the first to whoop and holler, teasing me loud as anything.
The rest of the students around us caught on and joined right in, hooting and laughing.
Normally, I would've leaned right into the camera and cheered my lungs out for Carter.
But not this time.
I turned my head away, my expression totally deadpan.
As I turned my head, I caught sight of the disposable coffee cup in Amy's hand, crumpled almost beyond recognition.
The announcer kept going with the player introductions.
When the last competitor stepped onto the ice, a sudden wave of excited murmurs and whoops rippled through the stands.
"He's so hot! Alexander Voss!"
Isabella, who was sitting right next to me, shot to her feet in an instant.
I stared dazedly at the guy called Alexander.
Then a thought hit me out of nowhere.
I didn't actually like Carter, not really.
I just liked guys who were tall.
Hot.
And had great bodies.
After her initial burst of excitement died down, Isabella nudged me with her elbow. "Come on, be honest. Alexander's way better than Carter, right?"
Way better was an understatement.
He was taller than Carter, better-looking than Carter, and had this sharp, magnetic edge that Carter could never pull off.
Even with most of his face hidden under a helmet, you could tell at a glance he was ridiculously good-looking.
I nodded in agreement.
"Not bad... not bad at all..."
Amy let out a sharp, cold snort when she heard what I said.
Isabella shot her a confused look. "What's your deal? What's with the scoff?"
