Sophie’s POV
I stood completely still.
The footsteps were getting closer.

Step.
My heart pounded so loudly that I was afraid whoever was coming could hear it.
“Alexander?” I called softly.
There was no answer.
I looked toward the staircase.
The hallway was empty.
I took a step backward.
Then another.
My hand reached for the doorknob behind me.
I wanted to lock myself inside the room, but something told me that would be a terrible idea.
The footsteps stopped.
Silence filled the hallway.
I held my breath.
Then a shadow appeared on the wall.
Someone was standing at the bottom of the stairs.
I couldn't see their face.
“Who are you?”

I stepped backward again.
