The Miami Gambit

543 Words
The flight across the Atlantic felt like a heavy, silent preparation for war. Kaiden and Leila were functioning on minimal sleep and maximum paranoia. In the anonymity of the transatlantic flight, the tension eased marginally, allowing a deep dive into strategy. “Vane is running a clean business on paper—art, antiques, exotic metals,” Leila explained, using her laptop to display a detailed schematic of Vane's massive waterfront villa in Miami Beach. “It’s heavily secured, but the pattern is familiar. He’ll have a shielded server room, probably underground.” “We’re not breaking in with guns,” Kaiden stated firmly. “That’s what Vane and The Watcher expect. We go in quiet. We steal the data without anyone knowing we were there until it’s too late.” The complexity of the job was staggering. They had to bypass Vane’s biometric security, avoid internal Covenant assets who might be guarding the place, and locate a specific server before Vane realized his logistics were exposed. Kaiden dedicated his time to healing. He was a master of self-care for combat wounds, meticulously cleaning his ribs and treating the severe bruise on his shoulder. He also spent hours studying the next pattern on his tattoo—the Miami key—a small, stylized bird of prey on his left wrist. “The bird of prey,” Leila commented, watching him trace the lines. “A symbol Vane always used. He thought of himself as above the fray.” “He’s about to fall back into it,” Kaiden said coldly. “We need a distraction. Something loud, expensive, and completely outside the scope of a two-man infiltration team.” Leila smiled faintly, a hint of the old, reckless spark returning to her eyes. “Vane is hosting a private viewing of a newly acquired Roman artifact next Friday. High-profile collectors, diplomats, and lots of expensive jewelry. Perfect opportunity for a classic jewel heist… that we use to simply get past the front door.” They spent the rest of the flight meticulously planning the ruse. They wouldn’t steal the jewels; they would merely create the illusion of a breach—a short, spectacular distraction to cover their entry into the secure server rooms. When they landed in the humid, electric atmosphere of Miami, the plan was simple but fragile: Stage the Distraction: Create a high-profile robbery alert at Vane's mansion during the viewing. Infiltrate: Use the ensuing chaos to slip into the heavily shielded server room. Extract: Secure the next data chip and the coordinates it holds. As they stepped off the plane, Kaiden felt the weight of the city—a blend of glamour and grit that felt disturbingly similar to his previous life. He looked at the stylized bird tattoo on his wrist. “Vane thought he was flying high,” Kaiden murmured, pulling his collar higher to hide the ink. “He won’t see the shadow coming until it’s too late.” The chase was no longer about survival. It was about dismantling the very organization he had once helped create, one traitor at a time. The Miami mission was the point of no return.
