Chapter 20: Forbidden Fling

Watching her walk away from me was like watching someone stroll toward a cliff edge. My chest tightened, a knot of pure anxiety twisting in my gut. I didn't want her to get hurt, or worse, get swallowed by these woods entirely. When I saw her reach that slick, rocky path and lose her balance, my heart stopped. I knew if I didn't get to her in time, she was looking at a serious head injury.
In a heartbeat, I raced to her. I moved faster than any human could, catching her just before she could crack her skull against the stone.
When I pulled her up, I couldn't help but stare. She was breathing hard, her face flushed from the cold and the scare.
She was strikingly pretty, especially with those green eyes wide and searching mine.
