Grace realized halfway to her flat that she had left her bag at Rex's place. All the important stuff was inside that little thing. Why was she so careless like this? She wasn't thinking about anything when the only thing she had to think about was how to get out of her ex-boyfriend's house and not bother him any longer. That's what she wanted.
If Grace's closeness with Rex grew more intimate, especially under the circumstance that her marriage was on the brink of death, she was afraid that something undesirable would happen. For example, the most obvious example is that she likes him again, like she used to. No, she doesn't want that to happen.
It bothered Grace because she felt that she would be ignorant. In the past, she left Rex for Luke. And now, with no shame, she was suddenly back in Rex's life when her marriage was on the verge of collapse? That was so unfair to him. And she was very self-conscious.
In the past, it was Grace who left Rex. She broke his heart. It was an unjustifiable act. And now, she felt guilty having to remember all the things that happened with him.
Grace chose to shake her head and forget all the things that prevented her from being calm. Quickly, she then increased the pace of her footsteps. In no time, she had finally reached her flat, but something was already waiting for her there.
Something that Grace had never thought about.
Something that was completely unexpected.
Something made Grace suddenly stop walking and transform into a statue.
And something made Grace feel very sick.
Yes, Grace was looking at Luke, the tall and handsome man who she was about to confirm was her ex-husband.
Grace didn't know why Luke was here. His sudden presence made her hate him even more. How did he know that she lived here? Was he stalking her? Did he have a spy? Then, a memory hit Grace's head. Obviously, this was Luke, she had been through a lot with him, she knew him. And Luke could always know about anything, that was him. And for him, finding Grace after she left him was not a difficult job.
So, with clenched fists and a hardened jaw, Grace finally stepped closer to Luke. Her anger was already boiling. The sight of Luke's face made her sick to her stomach. She didn't like this, whatever it was that brought Luke to the cheap flat she was renting to sleep in for who knows how long.
"What are you doing here?" Grace asked in a sharp, hard voice, which must have sounded so piercing.
Grace's voice distracted Luke, who had been busy staring at the door in front of him.
"You're back. I thought you wouldn't open the door for me. I've been waiting for you here for a while."
"I don't care about that, what I'm asking is why you're here. How did you know I lived here?"
"I can explain it to you."
Grace took a step forward, her hands now folded in front of her chest. She said, "Then please explain now."
"I almost know everything about you. My friend told me that you live here."
"Your friend seems to have become your personal spy, huh?" Grace quipped at Luke with a lopsided smile plastered on her lips. "Okay, now you tell me where you're going, and then you're out of here. I don't want to see you again if you want to know, so hurry up and tell me everything."
"Are you sure you want me to say it here?" Luke asked.
Grace knew what Luke was getting at, so she said, "I'm not going to let you inside. You're going to find every way to stay here longer, so yeah, I want you to say it here. Then you get the hell out of here."
"Grace..." Luke stepped up, it was obvious he was about to reach his wife.
Realizing the signs were coming, Grace immediately backed away. "Don't touch me!" She exclaimed loudly, her voice almost a scream.
Grace hugged her body, the look in her eyes sharpening for Luke.
"Grace, come on, I don't want us to be like this. I'm begging you, come back to me. I'm really sorry for you. I only love you, always you, you, and you. There is only you in my heart, Grace. Please, come back to me."
Grace hardened her face. "Is that what brought you here to see me?"
This time, Luke was silent. No sound escaped his lips.
Finding that the man standing in front of her did not respond to anything, Grace immediately concluded that her words were correct and very much on target.
"There's nothing to fix, Luke. I'm already angry, hateful, disgusted, and disappointed with you. You broke my trust. And what you said to me didn't move me at all. I don't believe a word that comes out of your mouth. You've always been good at playing me, you've always been good at getting me to forgive you every time you make a f*****g mistake, but not this time, Luke. Don't expect to get an apology from me again. I don't want to be with you anymore. We're really done."
Out of breath. That's how Grace felt after speaking at length without a pause. Her chest rose and fell. Her emotions were getting more and more unstable. Her fists tightened. Every second that passed added to her hatred for Luke.
"You always make that mistake again, even though you apologized to me. Every time you get caught with girls you don't know where you met, you beg me to forgive you. Followed by a string of other lies, that this was the last time, and that you wouldn't make that mistake again. Bullshit, Luke. Damn you, I stupidly went along with you. I believed that you would change. But what's the proof? You never meant it. You say you'll stop making the same mistakes just to keep me calm and not take steps that will hurt you. But enough of this, I've fully realized that I'm still good enough to put up with you all this time. You can't expect me anymore. I'm not coming back to you, ever. Our story is truly over, Luke. Get out of my life, stay away, and don't try to pull me away again. Because I won't fall for your charms anymore."
Luke repeatedly rubbed his face and let out a long sigh at Grace's words. He felt uneasy and upset at the same time because his wife said so. Legally, Grace is still his wife today. They weren't divorced yet, and Luke didn't want that to happen. No, he didn't want Grace to completely walk away from his life.
That would never happen, ever. Divorce was not the way Luke wanted to go. He still loved Grace.
"I know, I know that I've let you down very badly and repeatedly. I know my faults, Grace. But please, I promise this is the last time. There will be no more women besides you. Please, I don't want to lose you. I..."
"That's enough, Luke. I don't want to hear your f*****g stupid words anymore. To me, that's just the umpteenth bullshit you've said to me. I'm not going back to you again! Remember this, put your ears wide, and please understand, I'm not going back into your arms again. You've broken my heart too deeply. I don't want to get hurt and bleed again because of you. That's it, I don't want to cause her pain by being around you. Please, just go."
"I won't leave until you forgive me. I'm asking for another chance."
"I've given you plenty of chances to change, but you just won't listen to me. You always ignore me and always cheat on me with many other women out there that I don't know about at all. And when you get caught, you just apologize and lie, saying that you won't do it again. Bullshit, Luke. I'm not going to fall for you again. Leave right now!"
Grace was completely out of breath, her voice was growing hoarse. Not to mention that her face was now red. Anger flickered in her eyes. Her hatred for Luke was becoming more and more deeply rooted.
And what annoyed Grace even more was that Luke had yet to get out of her way.
Grace didn't want to deal with that man anymore. If Luke wasn't going to get out of the way, she'd be the one to do it.
Quickly, Grace barged past Luke to get closer to the door, but then she realized that she didn't have the key. Her flat key was in her bag, and she had left her bag at Rex's house. Damn it. Grace was annoyed with herself for being careless. If that's the way it was going to be, it was going to be even harder for her to get away from Luke now.
"I don't want us to get divorced just because of this, I don't want to be separated from you."
Luke's words really caught Grace's attention. She turned around again. It felt like she wanted to burst out laughing right now. "Just as you said? It's more than just that. Cheating is serious and too fatal. Especially when we're married. And you say that so lightly? Remember, Luke, you've been playing behind my back, not for the first time, but for the umpteenth time."
"And now, what do you want? What do I have to do to get you to forgive me. Please explain, I'll do whatever you want as long as you come back to me, as long as we get back together."
"No, Luke. That will never happen. The only thing you can do is stay away from me. That's what I want. Go away, please."
"You can't really want a divorce from me, can you? I know you're very angry with me, but I'm begging you, please give me a chance. I'll bet, I'll really change, as long as you give me just one more chance. If I make that mistake again, I will really leave you."
"Unfortunately, the chance for you is already completely gone. There is no more chance for you. This should be a lesson for you, Luke. Hopefully, in the future, you'll know what to do and should think about the repercussions of the action you're about to take. Now, get out of my sight."
Luke was about to leave, he had turned around, but suddenly he saw a man coming with a bag that he recognized. It was Grace's bag. He knew. He recognized it because it was the bag Luke had given Grace for her birthday last year.
And Luke's jaw hardened as he recognized the man carrying his wife's bag. He was Rex.
Luke's anger is now unstoppable.
