Waking up in a strange place with a dazed mind made Grace wonder to herself. She then positioned herself to sit on the soft mattress. A long sigh escaped from her mouth. Her hair looked messy. When she tried to stand up, she groaned softly. Dizziness seized her again, but she tried to stay afloat and continued walking in search of the door.
Grace still had no idea where she was, and when her steps inexplicably led her to the kitchen, that's when she saw Rex, her ex-boyfriend, busy cooking.
Grace was stunned for a moment, her eyes blinking. As she stood with her gaze unmoving from Rex, she now knew about the question that had attacked her earlier. She knew where she was now. There was Rex not far from her, so it was certain that she was at the man's residence. This is his house.
And Rex was now looking at Grace. He was aware of her presence. She stood, looking rumpled, disheveled, and very bad.
Not knowing what to say to the man, Grace just stood there.
"Hey, you're awake." Rex said it with a smile that was plastered so clearly on his lips. "Exactly. Come and sit down. I just finished making scrambled eggs, there's bacon too. Let's have breakfast together."
Grace felt there was no harm in not rejecting the offer that sounded tempting. She nodded. Her stomach was hungry, and she couldn't lie to herself if she really needed breakfast, right now.
And without waiting any longer, Grace dragged her feet to get closer to Rex, then sat on the chair, just like he asked.
"Wait a minute." Rex immediately moved swiftly to get a plate, then served breakfast to Grace, which was very kind and understanding. This made Grace suddenly think of her husband. And she immediately pushed his face out of her head. She didn't want to think about him for now.
"Here, I hope you like my cooking." Rex said as he placed a plate of scrambled eggs and bacon in front of Grace. He also served it to himself.
"Thank you." This was all Grace could say, she didn't know what else to say. Her voice sounded very hoarse.
"Would you like some coffee?" Rex asked.
Grace nodded, then replied, "Yes, please."
Grace's answer made Rex smile again. And she realized, he had always been like that. She wasn't making it up, she knew him well enough. They were always together during college until an incident made them break up.
Stop, Grace doesn't want to cause her mind to wander far, thinking about the past.
"Here's your coffee."
Grace smiled slightly at Rex when a cup of coffee was placed in front of her. "Thank you again."
"You're welcome. Enjoy your breakfast, don't be shy, if you're still lacking and need anything, just tell me."
"Ah no, this is enough." Grace began to take a spoon and feed her mouth with Rex's scrambled egg.
Rex also did the same, his gaze had not moved from Grace's face since before. He was happy that she seemed to enjoy her breakfast.
Not wanting to stay silent, Rex finally said, "What do you think of my cooking?"
"It's delicious, I enjoy it," Grace answered while looking back at Rex's handsome face. Then, she added, "I can finish this, you're really good at cooking."
Rex laughed softly. "You praise me, it's always like that."
"Because it's a fact, I'm not lying. You've always been a good cook," Grace said again, and a second later she regretted saying that last sentence. She had emphasized to herself not to bring up her past with him, but she broke the promise she made.
"And you always never say anything bad about the food I make, no matter if it's as simple as scrambled eggs and bacon like this."
This is what Grace doesn't want, she ends up dragging herself to think more about the past, more precisely the times of her togetherness with Rex. And for her, this was dangerous, she didn't want to go any further, there were boundaries that she had to enforce.
Now, not wanting to talk about this anymore, Grace changed the subject quickly. "By the way, I can't force my brain to keep thinking. I mean, I don't know why I was at your house."
"You want me to explain that?"
Rex immediately understood what Grace wanted, even though she had not explained further. Therefore, Grace nodded quickly. With Rex like this, it was easier for Grace to be straightforward.
"Yes, if you don't mind."
Rex shook his head. "Absolutely not, I can tell you now."
"Okay." Grace immediately positioned her sitting position to be much better. The gaze she directed at her ex was getting more focused. She couldn't wait to hear the answer Rex would give her. She was already curious. Ever since she woke up and realized she was at Rex's house, she kept wondering why she was here, what the reason was. Unfortunately, she couldn't think because her mind was stuck. The throbbing that her head felt was getting more painful if she continued to force herself to think.
Rex, who saw that Grace was ready to listen to his explanation, chose to give an explanation immediately, he didn't want to make her wait too long.
"Look, I saw you when I was walking around looking for fresh air, you were drunk, then you passed out. That's why you're here, in my house, because I brought you."
Rex's brief explanation immediately triggered Grace's memory to come out of her hiding place. Now, she could remember the whole incident last night. And when the incident at the bar last night suddenly came to her mind, she felt ashamed for accusing others without any evidence.
Grace let out a long breath, then shook her head quickly. She didn't want to think about it anymore, which only made her feel even more uncomfortable.
"I don't know what to do. Last night, the only thing that popped into my head was taking you to my house, I know that I was wrong, but I was confused. I'm sorry."
"Rex, it's okay, you don't need to apologize to me. You're not guilty at all. Instead, I should thank you, I fainted, and you saved me."
Rex smiled at the answer given by Grace. "Oh, and I'm willing to bet that I didn't do anything to you, please believe me."
"I believe you." Grace tried to smile.
"Thank you, I'm glad to hear that."
"You've been good to me, you even made me breakfast. And I really feel bad for you." There was a two-second pause, before Grace finally added, "Well, I think I should leave in a minute."
"Are you sure you're okay? I don't mind you being here a little longer. My door is always wide open for you, you don't have to feel bad for me."
"Rex, this seems wrong, I'm sorry. I won't bother you anymore, I'm a stranger. We don't have any relationships."
"What are you talking about? I don't understand. You're not a stranger, I know you."
"I think I should go now." Grace then stood up immediately.
Seeing that, Rex certainly did not remain silent. He also stood up and immediately exclaimed, "I never considered you a stranger, you have to remember that. I know that we don't have any relationships anymore, we're just in the past, but that doesn't mean our relationship has to be strange, right? I mean, we can still be friends. I think you know what I'm talking about."
"Thanks again, Rex. Have a nice day, I'm off now."
Grace quickly walked toward the door. In her opinion, there was no reason for her to stay at Rex's house any longer. This was not good for her, it just seemed wrong.
Rex didn't just stand by and watch Grace walk away from him. Rex, whose stride was much wider, managed to reach Grace easily. He immediately blocked her steps. He stood in front of the door, blocking Grace's steps.
Grace was surprised by what Rex did.
"I know you're in trouble," Rex said suddenly, making Grace's heart thump violently.
Grace shook her head. "No, you don't know anything about me. I'm asking you to please get out of my way."
"Grace, you can't lie to me. I can feel it, I know you. You have problems, you rarely get drunk, and last night you were out at the bar. I know that I'm right."
"And if you're right, then what am I supposed to do? Explain my problems to you?"
"If it makes you feel so much better, why not? You can pour it all out on me. I don't mind at all."
"I know your intentions are good, but this is very wrong, Rex. Please, step aside right now, I have to go."
"You don't look okay. I'm not letting you out now."
"Just because you did me a favor last night and were nice and polite to me, doesn't mean you can boss me around, Rex."
"I'm not controlling you, I'm just..." Rex's tongue hung out. He did not continue his words. His eyes closed, and his breath came out heavily.
"Just what?" Grace asked. Or rather, urge.
"I'm just worried about you."
"You don't have to do that. It's not your obligation. I'm fine."
After saying that firmly, as well as the fact that she saw an opening to break through Rex quickly, she immediately walked with wide strides. And finally, she did it. She was free from Rex's house.
"Is this all about him?"
The loud question that suddenly came from behind Grace's body made her stop suddenly. Obviously, the question came from Rex. She swallowed, but did not turn her body. Her lips were pressed together in a straight line.
And without any intention to answer Rex's question, Grace chose to continue walking. She felt her feelings were getting worse, especially since Rex knew without her explaining anything.
Grace is really broken right now. No, she has been broken for a long time, she used to deny it, but not now.
