CHAPTER TWENTY SIX Avery had remained with Ramirez for every second that passed between the moment she cradled him against her on the floor of Rustin George’s studio to the moment he was wheeled through the double doors in the hospital, headed for surgery. She’d had no concept of time during the trip from the studio to the apartment. The very events that had occurred in the studio seemed hazy, as if she had been watching them from a faraway television screen.
