EMERSON, OR EMMY, as she told me to call her, met me in the hotel dining room early the next morning. I slid into the seat as she waved the waiter over and ordered three coffees.
“Is someone else joining us?”
“Nah, two are for me.”
“You’re not a morning person either?”
“Not until I’ve been drip-fed caffeine.”
I went to rub sleep away from my eyes, then thought the better of it. When I’d looked in the mirror ten minutes ago, I’d seen a panda looking back at me.
“Thanks for staying to help me this morning.”
“Like I said, you need someone with you.”
“It shouldn’t take me long to finish up. I just have my books and the live vaccines to take back with me. The BSL-4 stuff has already gone.”
