“Yvaine, hi.” Adaline greeted her sweetly, something anyone would be able to see was nothing but fake politeness.
“Did you need something?” Yvaine asked boredly, tightening her hold on Serena’s arm.
She was glad that Sebastian had gone to get the car because she had no doubt in her mind that he would have loved to punch Maxwell. Yvaine didn’t want to create a scene here; it was a mall that her family frequently visited, so she didn’t want to ruin that for them.
Thankfully Maxwell had stepped away from the three to take a phone call which saved them from hearing his voice.
“What can’t we just say hi?” Adaline asked with a pout, “Or are you still sour over your divorce?”
“Why would I be sour?” Yvaine asked with a laugh, “I’m free and rid of him.”
“Please as if you can do any better.” Adaline scoffed. “Maxwell is about to be one of the richest bachelors in town, he’s in the same league as the Deveroux’s, something you will never be.”
Yvaine looked at Serena, the girl sharing the same look before they both started laughing together. They truly had no idea about who she really was, and she was going to love seeing their faces when they found out.
“What’s so funny?” Adaline asked annoyed, giving the two a sense of DeJa'Vu from the other day.
“Maxwell will never be in the same league as the Deveroux’s.” Yvaine told her after calming her laughter. “And to even suggest such a thing is offensive.”
“How dare you!” Adaline snapped, “Maxwell is about to reach new heights and it’s all thanks to me.” She gave them a wide smile, clearly proud of herself. “Honestly I think I’ve done more for Maxwell in 24 hours than you have in three years.”
Yvaine could only see red as she glared at Adaline, Serena held her hands up in surrender when Yvaine stepped closer to Adaline.
“I dare you to say that again.” Yvaine warned.
For a moment, Adaline was afraid of the look in Yvaine’s eyes. However, she noticed Maxwell hanging up the phone and immediately changed her tune.
Adaline let out a scream as she threw herself back onto the floor, earning everyone’s attention. “Yvaine please!” She cried, “I just wanted to make peace!”
Maxwell immediately ran over, shoving Yvaine back before kneeling beside Adaline, “Addie! Are you alright?” He looked up at Yvaine with a glare. “What did you do!?”
“Max, no.” Adaline shook her head, “She didn’t mean to, it’s my fault…”
Yvaine wanted to applaud Adaline’s acting; she could probably make it as an actor if she wasn’t focused on Maxwell. Serena scoffed and pulled Yvaine back when Maxwell stood and tried to reach for her.
“Don’t touch her.” Serena hissed at him.
“I didn’t touch her.” Yvaine defended herself. “She’s faking it.”
Adaline forced a small cry from her lips. “I just wanted to apologize for how we met.” She denied, “I swear I just wanted to be friends.”
“God get this girl an Oscar.” Serena muttered.
Yvaine bit the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing, which only seemed to make Maxwell even more angry. Before she could see it coming, Maxwell was already lunging for her with his hand raised.
She was going to be hit again.
How had she not noticed his true colors sooner? God, she had really deceived herself for this man.
Yvaine clenched her eyes shut and prepared for the smack, only her eyes snapped open at the sound of Maxwell letting out a loud shout.
Maxwell was on the ground with a squealing Adaline by his side. Sebastian was standing in front of Yvaine and Serena with a murderous look in his eyes. His chest was rising and falling at a rapid pace with his fists clenched at his side.
“What the f**k do you think you’re doing?” Sebastian seethed, “You’re lucky all I did was punch you.”
“Seb.” Yvaine pleaded while grabbing his arm. “He isn’t worth it.”
“He almost hit you!” He shouted angrily.
Yvaine flinched, not used to her brother yelling at her. “I know.”
Sebastian sighed, his eyes immediately showing regret. “I’m sorry.” He added, “Just god, Eevee, were you going to let him hit you again?”
Yvaine looked down at her feet, she knew that her reply wouldn’t help the situation, nor would it make Sebastian feel better. She was sure that if he had hit her, she would’ve punched him right back like the time before.
“Who do you think you are!?” Adaline shouted while getting up in Sebastian’s face. “Do you know who you just hit?”
“Yeah, a Grade A asshole.” Serena defended Sebastian. “He was about to hit a woman!”
Maxwell glared up at them from his spot on the floor, his nose once again bleeding and this time it was at an awkward angle, which meant Sebastian had broken his nose.
Yvaine couldn’t deny how it made her feel better.
“I will make you regret this” Maxwell promised before standing to his feet and storming away.
“This isn’t over.” Adaline added before running after Maxwell.
Yvaine released a breath that she didn’t know she was holding, her shoulders sagging as Serena wrapped her arms around her tightly. How long had she been holding her breath? Was it before or after Maxwell raised his hand at her? She wasn’t sure, but finally having oxygen allowed her to process what just happened.
He was going to hit her… with so many people around. He truly didn’t care about people seeing how he treated her.
“Come on, let’s get out of here.” Sebastian sighed while leading the two to where he had parked the car.

Sebastian had told their family what had happened at the mall, it was safe to say that they all were seething and wanted nothing more than to put his head on a spike. Atticus and Lucian were livid, Yvaine couldn’t recall the last time that she had seen the two so angry.
“I hope that he runs into me somehow.” Atticus seethed as the five took a seat.
Serena had chosen an uptown adorable little diner where she and Yvaine had become regulars during Serena’s stay in Bellmare.
“How long are you here for Serena?” Lucian asked, changing the subject before Atticus continued his rant.
“I’ll be leaving after Yvaine’s reappearance into society.” Serena replied before taking a sip of her water. “How is planning for that going by the way?”
“Mother is planning it.” Sebastian said while rolling up his sleeves. “She’s having a blast, and she’s excited for you to meet Vivienne finally.”
Yvaine had learned that she had a younger sibling who was a carbon copy of their mother when she was a child. Vivienne had their mother’s dark brown hair and hazel eyes, and she had just turned three.
The reason she hadn’t met Vivienne was because she was with the babysitter and being brought back when Yvaine had come home. She was excited to meet her little sister. She could recall asking her mother for one when she was little, and her mother would always laugh without giving an answer.
Serena let out a small laugh, “Oh I bet Cynthia is having the time of her life planning it.”
“Oh, she is.” Atticus chuckled, “It’ll be the biggest event we’ve held yet.”
“I told her not to do it.” Yvaine shook her head with a small smile. “She’s planning to invite all those that we work with, and it’ll be held on Seb, and I’s birthday.”
“And how will we be ruining Maxwell’s life?” Serena wondered with a small smirk on her face.
Before anyone could say anything, someone was approaching their table, and it wasn’t a waiter to take their order.
“Can we help you?” Lucian asked with a raised brow.
“Actually yes.”
