Suddenly, though, his nose flexed with a scent that teased like the remembrance of a dream forgotten in the very instant before awakening. Not knowing why, Kalesh turned his head slowly back and forth, and then he followed the cool, shimmery smell of hard-forged strange metal under the earth. He walked back beside the long swell beneath the grass where the giant’s other arm was thrown out and backward, and just beyond the indistinct outline of an enormous hand spread gropingly wide, he dropped to one knee and pushed his own little hands through the soil to a shape he could not see.
